Air Canada Aeroplan Award Sale Examples

Before we dive into the sale, it's helpful to familiarize yourself with Air Canada's award chart (caution: PDF link). The airline recently updated its award chart, making several routes more expensive. Since Air Canada uses 10 different award charts, we won't list them all here.

However, it's always a good idea to compare the sale pricing with the price listed in the award chart. Since Air Canada awards are still dynamically priced, the “sale” price is sometimes higher than the “starting at” value listed in the award chart. When that's the case, you aren't necessarily getting the best deal.

Similarly, you should always compare sale pricing to that of other carriers. Even though Air Canada is running a sale, full-priced awards on competing airlines can sometimes be more affordable.

That said, here are a handful of routes on sale along with their advertised pricing:

  • Toronto (YYZ) to Los Angeles (LAX) from 12,200 points + CAD 172 (one-way)
  • Montréal (YUL) to New York (EWR) from 5,400 points + CAD 165 (one-way)
  • Toronto (YYZ) to Montego Bay (MBJ) from 11,300 points + CAD 214 (one-way)
  • Montréal (YUL) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) from 14,900 points + CAD 118 (one-way)
  • Montréal (YUL) to Quito (UIO) from 117,000 points + CAD 399 (round trip)
  • Toronto (YYZ) to Madrid (MAD) from 55,000 points + CAD 194 (round trip)
  • Montréal (YUL) to Amsterdam (AMS) from 60,200 points + CAD 319 (round trip)
  • Vancouver (YVR) to Tokyo (NRT) from 84,200 points + CAD 188 (round trip)
  • Vancouver (YVR) to Seoul (ICN) from 96,600 points + CAD 200 (round trip)
  • Vancouver (YVR) to Sydney, Australia (SYD) from 101,800 points + CAD 353 (round trip)

Want to make these awards even cheaper? Chase is currently offering a 20% bonus on transfers to Aeroplan — or a 30% bonus if you're an Chase Air Canada Aeroplan® Credit Card cardholder and transfer at least 50,000 points. Either way, by combining this transfer bonus with the Aeroplan sale, you can book awards between Canada and the U.S. from 5,000 Chase points.

Unlike past Aeroplan sales, the advertised pricing appears to be somewhat accurate. For instance, a flight from Montréal (YUL) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR) really is just 14,900 points, as long as you don't mind a layover:

That said, you can book a similar itinerary in July 2027 — weeks after the sale should end — for the exact same price. So, it's hard to tell how much of a deal you're really getting.

Similarly, finding availability at the advertised rates isn't always easy. You'll have to do some digging and price shopping to find an award that is truly a great value, but they do exist.

How To Book Aeroplan Awards

There are some quirks to the Aeroplan website that you should know about:

  • It may help to start your award search on United's website to find availability, as there is no 30-day calendar function. Unfortunately, you can view only a week of results at a time.
  • You can filter for direct flights, exclude airlines, and also exclude certain connecting airports.
  • You must be logged in to search for awards.
  • You can pay more or fewer points by offsetting with cash payments. This is useful if you are short on the required points and are willing to pay cash to make up the difference. Conversely, you can use extra points to cover the taxes added to the ticket at the end (though this usually isn't the most valuable use of Aeroplan points).
  • Aeroplan does not add fuel surcharges to its own tickets.
  • Aeroplan does not charge a flat fee for its award pricing on Air Canada flights. Instead, point costs can fluctuate based on demand, holidays, etc.
  • See our complete guide to Air Canada Aeroplan for more details about awards.

You can also boost your Aeroplan balance by opening an Aeroplan co-branded credit card. In the U.S., you can apply for the Chase Air Canada Aeroplan® Credit Card (Rates & Fees) from Chase. Our friends in Canada have several options, including the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite.

However, with such a short sale window, you likely don't have time to open a new card and earn bonus points that you can redeem in the next few days. Still, consider applying for a card so you can take advantage of the next sale:

Bottom Line

Air Canada's award sale can be very rewarding under the right circumstances, but the fine print is important — and helpful when managing expectations for a sale like this. “Up to 25% off” means exactly what it sounds like, with extra emphasis on the words “up to.”

If your dates are flexible, it's worth clicking through to see if you can find a better deal on a different day of the week. And remember, if the pricing you find with Aeroplan isn't cost-effective, remember that other airlines might offer something better. United and Avianca frequently offer better pricing on many promotion-eligible routes — even for the same Aeroplan flights.
