IHG is running a targetted promotion for IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card cardholders. The promotion is similar to one that was run for Cyber Monday, where you could receive a 10% discount on the cash portion of a points and cash booking. If you were an IHG Rewards Card holder, you were entitled to a further 5% discount, for a total discount of 15% on the cash portion of the reservation. The new offer is only available to IHG Rewards Card cardholders and gives you a straight 15% discount on the cash portion of the reservation.
While the offer appears to be targeted at IHG Rewards Card cardholders, some have received an email with the promotion, while others have not. Whether this is because the offer is targeted, or just an oversight from IHG is unknown at this point but reading the terms and conditions, it seems it is good for anyone since the link to the promotion is available to everyone. The key terms are as follows:
- Offer is valid for bookings made through February 12, 2017
- The offer is valid for stays through March 31, 2017
- You will earn a 15% discount on the cash portion of the sale
- Using your IHG card to pay for your stay, you will earn 5 points per dollar spent.
Possible Cheap Points Purchase
This is a nice offer if you have a stay planned during the period. If not, you can still use it to pick up some cheap IHG points, since if you make a point and cash reservation and then cancel it. IHG doesn’t refund the cash, but refunds you points instead of the cash you paid. The number of points refunded is the difference from the cost of a free night on points less the points paid. This number of points does not change regardless of the amount of cash paid. So, if you paid 20,000 points plus cash for a hotel that typically costs 60,000 points, you will receive 40,000 points for your cash, plus your 20,000 points.
This is interesting since if you do some shopping around you can pick up points for 0.51 cents per point. An excellent value—even better value than the current IHG promotion offering 75% points bonus on purchases, which if you max out will give a cost per point of 0.66 cents per point.
This is a great way to use up some points and pick up some cheaper stays in the next couple of months. Alternatively, you can purchase some cheap points by booking and canceling. Although care must be taken if you abuse the refund system, you may end up having your account closed by IHG.
