Amex Membership Rewards to Hilton Honors 30 Percent Bonus Through November 2018

Key Terms

  • Promotion is valid on transfers through November 30, 2018
  • During the promotion, points will transfer at a ratio of 1:2.6, instead of the usual 1:2
  • You will receive 2,600 Hilton points for every 1,000 Membership Rewards points transferred
  • Minimum transfer of 1,000 points

Is It Worth It?

Transferring points to Hilton for redemption at a high-end property may not be worth it. However, if you are a budget-savvy traveler, then there are some great options for redemptions with Hilton Honors. If you hold elite status with Hilton and are planning on a longer stay, then taking advantage of the promotion can be quite lucrative, especially if you can use Hiltons’ 5th night free on awards perk.

Our Take

If you are short of a few thousand Hilton Honors points to hit a specific redemption, then this promotion may be worth considering. However, transferring a large number of points even with the transfer bonus will likely not provide a good value for your transfer. You are better off leveraging your Membership Rewards points with an airline transfer partner and cashing in on an international business or first class flight. Almost every time transferring your points to an airline will yield better value, transfer bonus or not.

  • Totally agree with the “take”. The ratio would need to be 1 MR : 3HH at a minimum to even consider this transfer at any time, and imho, it would need to be 1:5 or 6 (which we’ll never see) for it to really be worthwhile.

  • I’m planning a Hilton Stay soon but I don’t think it would be worth transferring MR points, even with a transfer bonus, like the article says, they are so much more useful elsewhere. The Hilton Credit cards, even those with no annual fee, make it so easy to earn Hilton Points with all their bonus categories, that it just would not be worthwhile. I also read on another blog this morning that Hilton is quietly increasing the points required on some of its hotels that have traditionally been great values, so only transfer points if you are going to make the booking right away.

    • Thanks for the quality, additional information to help in making a decision here – eg how easy it is to earn Hilton Points with there cards; the increasing point requirement at heretofore great value properties, etc.

  • I actually need Hilton points these days and this promo is quite tempting.

    • They’re actually reasonably valuable because of Hilton’s large footprint and the ability to use them for partial payment for a stay.

  • So I wonder why this does not show up on my Membership rewards offers
