The World of Hyatt hotel loyalty program is one of our favorite programs. When you check into a Hyatt hotel, you'll want to maximize your spending to earn as many Hyatt points as possible. But just how many base and bonus points can you earn on World of Hyatt stays? Let's find out.

Open a World of Hyatt Account

To start, you'll need a World of Hyatt account, which you can create using this link. You'll then receive a Hyatt member number. Be sure to head to AwardWallet to track your World of Hyatt account with all your other loyalty programs to ensure you get a heads up before your points expire.

To give you a sense of how much points are worth, AwardWallet members typically redeem Hyatt points at 2.19¢ each. And that's just the average; you certainly can extract more value in the right circumstances.

This is the same World of Hyatt number you'll use across the many brands in the Hyatt program, whether staying at a hotel with “Hyatt” in the name — such as a Hyatt Hotels, Hyatt Regency, or Park Hyatt — or Hyatt's newer brands like Dream or Breathless.

Earning Hyatt Points

Earn elite status

You can earn World of Hyatt points at a faster rate if you get Hyatt elite status, though with not as large a bonus as other programs. Earning rates by status tier are:

  • Hyatt members: 5 base points per dollar (2.5 Base Points at Hyatt Studios)
  • Hyatt Discoverist status: 5.5 base points per dollar (10% bonus) (2.75 points at Hyatt Studios)
  • Hyatt Explorist status: 6 base points per dollar (20% bonus) (3 points at Hyatt Studios)
  • Hyatt Globalist status: 6.5 base points per dollar (30% bonus) (3.25 points at Hyatt Studios)

Up until the introduction of the Hyatt Studios brand, the Hyatt program didn't provide higher or lower earning rates based on hotel brand or category.

Outside of the Hyatt Studios brand, your earning rate at a Category 1 Hyatt Place will match the bonus point rate at a Category 7 Park Hyatt property. You'll surely earn more bonus points overall at the latter since it will cost more, though.

The Hyatt Studios brand earns 2.5 base points per dollar, so your status bonus will be multiplied by that base rather than the 5 base points per dollar earned at all other brands in the portfolio.

Promotion earning

World of Hyatt promotions can be lucrative if they fit into your travel plans. Promotions can vary from offering bonus points on paid stays, rebates off award prices, or earning additional elite night credits. Additionally, World of Hyatt often gives credit card holders even more valuable promotions.

AwardWallet maintains a list of the best loyalty program promotions. You also can check Hyatt's dedicated page, which may have offers targeted specifically to you.

Meeting and event planning

As a meeting planner or event organizer, you can earn points with World of Hyatt. You earn one bonus point per eligible U.S. dollar spent (up to 50,000 bonus points) for hosting a qualifying meeting or event at a Hyatt hotel. These points can be split among up to three different individuals involved in planning meetings. If you are also staying at the property, you will earn the normal base earning rates as well.

World of Hyatt credit cards

World of Hyatt has two co-branded credit cards available through Chase: The World of Hyatt Credit Card and the World of Hyatt Business Credit Card. Both offer 4 points per $1 spent on qualifying purchases at Hyatt properties in addition to at least 5 points from Hyatt per eligible $1 spent for being a World of Hyatt member (2.5 at Hyatt Studios), based on your status.

Both cards offer solid bonus categories and spending incentives; both also offer Hyatt Discoverist status automatically (the lowest tier) — which means you'll earn a 10% bonus on all base points earned shortly after you open the card.

One of the key differences between these cards is the free night offered automatically each year on the The World of Hyatt Credit Card. Cardholders receive an annual free night valid at Category 1–4 properties, received each year on account renewal (starting a year after account opening), and they can earn an extra free night (also with the same value) by spending $15,000 on purchases with the card each year. These certificates can't be exchanged for points, but they do count towards your elite nights for status earning when you use them.

Other credit cards

It's also possible to get a credit card to earn transferable points you can use beyond just World of Hyatt points. A perfect example is getting a credit card that earns Chase Ultimate Rewards. After all, you can transfer Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. Thus, your Ultimate Rewards points can be transferred to the Hyatt program for an equivalent number of World of Hyatt points and then redeemed for a free night.

That means you can transfer points from cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card to use as Hyatt points and redeem for stays at Hyatt hotels. However, these cards won't provide the Hyatt Discoverist status offered by Hyatt's own credit cards. They also won't help you earn an annual free night or extra free night each year.

Cards earning Chase Ultimate Rewards also don't provide a path to elite night credits for Hyatt status via spending, but they may provide a better path to earn points quickly, depending on your spending habits and the types of purchases you make. You'll redeem Hyatt points in the same way, no matter whether they came from one of Hyatt's own cards or were transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards.

A relatively new transfer partner for Hyatt is the Bilt program, which offers its own The Bilt Mastercard®. Like Ultimate Rewards, this program transfers to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio. However, Bilt offers a lot of promotions to earn bonus points — especially around Rent Day, the first of every month.

Fly on American Airlines flights

World of Hyatt partners with American Airlines, through which elite members of each program can receive reciprocal benefits. American Airlines elite members can earn one AAdvantage® bonus mile for every dollar spent at World of Hyatt stays and experiences. This is in addition to the World of Hyatt points earned.

When taking qualifying American Airlines flights, Hyatt elite members can earn bonus points after linking their AAdvantage account and Hyatt membership number. In this way, Hyatt elite members can earn bonus points at a rate of 1 Hyatt point per dollar spent with American Airlines.

Visit this page for details on the World of Hyatt–American Airlines partnership and to link your Hyatt and AAdvantage accounts.

Plus, if you use either the personal or business Hyatt card, you could earn 2x on airline tickets purchased directly from American Airlines, though you'll get better bonus earnings from other travel rewards cards.

Rent cars from Avis

On top of local transit spending with Hyatt's co-branded cards, there's another opportunity for earning Hyatt bonus points from transportation. You can earn 500 bonus points for qualifying rentals with Avis. This applies worldwide and doesn't require a coinciding hotel stay.

Buy Hyatt points

You can often buy Hyatt points with a bonus or discount. While we don't typically advise buying points, it can make sense if you plan to pay cash for a hotel stay and the cost of buying the required Hyatt points for that same stay is cheaper. This can sometimes make sense for anywhere from Category 1 properties with low award rates to Category 7 or Category 8 hotels that have a high cash price.

Note that these purchases don't count as base or bonus points toward earning elite status, but the decision to buy Hyatt points still can prove valuable when it presents savings against paying for a hotel outright.

How Many Points Can You Get On A Hyatt Stay?

Earning rates for paid stays

When you add your World of Hyatt loyalty number to your reservation, you can earn 5 base points for every eligible U.S. dollar spent on qualifying stays, dining, spa services, and other qualifying incidentals at participating locations. That's across all of Hyatt's many brands (including Homes & Hideaways by World of Hyatt and Mr & Mrs Smith properties), except for Hyatt Studios, which earns 2.5 base points per dollar.

Qualifying stays include cash rates, points and cash rates, and award nights. Qualifying points include base points earned on room rate and most on-property spending — including resort fees, but it's worth noting that you won't have to pay resort fees if you have top-tier Globalist elite status or are on a redemption stay (using entirely points or free night awards).

In addition to the base rate earnings, elite members enjoy bonus points.

Earning rates on points and cash stays

It's possible to redeem points for just part of your stay at Hyatt hotels. Depending on your status tier, you will earn the same base point and bonus point rate on the cash portion of your stay as you would if you hadn't redeemed points. However, you won't earn on the part of your stay covered by points or free nights, and you'll be responsible for paying resort fees, which aren't charged on reservations paid fully with points or certificates.

Earning rates on redemption stays

For Hyatt hotel stays using points or a free night award, you won't earn World of Hyatt points. However, you can earn points during these hotel stays if you charge something to your room. This could include minibar purchases or visiting the hotel's restaurant. Your bonus point earning rates for elite tier status, if you have it, will still apply to these incidentals, even when your room is fully covered by Hyatt points or free nights. You'll also still enjoy all of your elite benefits on these stays, no matter how you paid for the reservation.

How To Maximize Your Points On a Hyatt Stay

Since a Hyatt point tends to be more valuable than other hotel points, earning even more of them multiplies the rate of return on your spending. The best combination for maximizing your earnings is using a Hyatt card and holding Globalist status. This can provide 10.5x points on each dollar you spend (7.25 points per dollar at Hyatt Studios). At that rate, you'll earn enough bonus points for a free night quickly.

Can You Earn Points on Multiple Rooms?

According to World of Hyatt's terms and conditions, you can earn points on up to three total rooms, as long as the member is paying for all the rooms. Section 1.a.8 says:

“A Member may earn points for up to three (3) rooms per night (Member's room and two (2) additional rooms) within the same hotel or resort. The Member must be a registered guest, occupy at least one of the rooms, and pay an Eligible Rate for all applicable rooms. The Member will earn Base Points for each of the rooms, but the Member will only earn Tier-Qualifying Nights (defined in Appendix B) for one (1) room. In addition, only the room occupied by the Member will count toward current Program promotions and receive Program benefits and services. The occupant(s) of the additional room(s) will not receive points (or any partner credit offered to Members in lieu of points). Member may earn on up to two (2) additional rooms only once per stay – as measured by Member's occupancy of their own room. For purposes of clarification and without limiting the foregoing, once a member has earned points on two (2) additional rooms, they may not earn points on any further room other than the one which they are occupying for the remainder of their stay, regardless of the duration of that stay.”

Thus, you can only get bonus points on the room you stay in at a Hyatt hotel, even though it's possible to get base points on up to three rooms.

Final Thoughts

While earning Hyatt points can be a little slower than other hotel loyalty programs, I've always managed to have a healthy balance to redeem for free travel. By charging your on-property expenses to your room folio and paying for your stay with a co-branded World of Hyatt Card or Hyatt Business Card, you can get the maximum return of bonus points on your stays. Alternatively, you can focus on earning Chase Ultimate Rewards from a stable of credit cards that allow you to transfer points to use on a stay at a Hyatt hotel, but remember that you can't earn a free night award on these cards no matter how much you spend.

Padding your Hyatt balance with spending on one of the two co-branded credit cards, like bonus categories on local transit, gym memberships, or a fitness club membership, can help you earn points quicker. By maximizing earnings this way, you can get a head-start on earning enough points to cover your future stays in one of the most generous hotel loyalty programs.
