Unless you live in a city with great public transportation, you likely purchase hundreds of gallons of fuel each year. Along with food and housing, fuel ranks as one of the most significant expenses for many families. By using the right card at the pump, you can earn up to 6X points or 10.5% cash back on your fuel purchases.
Many of the best gas credit cards come with no annual fee and offer cash back, which is ideal if you want to keep your out-of-pocket costs to a minimum. In some cases, it might be worth paying an annual fee to earn transferable points, as these cards can provide even higher returns and additional benefits beyond fuel savings.
Without further ado, here are the best credit cards for gas and fuel you can use in 2026.
Best Overall Gas Credit Card: Citi Strata Premier® Card
The Citi Strata Premier® Card (Rates & Fees) is one of the best credit cards for fuel purchases. This card earns unlimited 3X points per $1 spent at gas and EV charging stations. You'll then be able to transfer those ThankYou® Points to Citi's 21 airline and hotel transfer partners.
While other cards may earn higher multipliers, the Citi Strata Premier takes the prize due to the value of Citi ThankYou Points. AwardWallet users redeem ThankYou Points for an average of 2.32¢ apiece, netting over a 6.9% return on gas purchases.
The Citi Strata Premier charges a $95 annual fee that can be easily offset by a $100 annual hotel credit for bookings of $500 or more through Citi Travel℠.

Best Fixed-Value Rewards Gas Credit Card: U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card
The U.S. Bank Altitude® Connect Visa Signature® Card offers the highest points multiplier on gas station purchases among general rewards credit cards. You'll earn 4X points at gas and EV charging stations on your first $1,000 spent each quarter. After $1,000 in spending each quarter, you'll earn just 1X on purchases. But as long as you spend less than $334 on gas each month, you're in the clear.
While this card has a fantastic multiplier, you won't have any way to redeem points for outsized value. Your points are worth 1¢ apiece toward travel or as a deposit into an eligible U.S. Bank account. However, if you are happy with lucrative earnings and fixed-value redemptions, it's hard to beat the Altitude Connect.
You'll also earn an unlimited 4X points on travel, 2X points on dining, streaming services, and grocery stores, and 1X points on all other purchases. You'll even get complimentary GigSky global mobile data plans through November 30, 2026.

Best Gas Credit Card for Costco Shoppers: Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi
Not only does Costco tend to offer more affordable gas than Exxon or Shell stations, but the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi also offers a great return on gas and fuel purchases. Cardholders earn 5% cash back rewards on gas at Costco and earn 4% cash back on other eligible gas and electric vehicle (EV) charging purchases for the first $7,000 combined spend per year, and then 1% thereafter.
Obviously, the Citi Costco Visa only makes sense if you are a loyal Costco shopper, as you'll need a Costco membership to maximize its benefits.
Note that you'll receive your cash back as an annual credit card reward certificate in February that is redeemable for cash or merchandise at U.S. Costco warehouses. This is notably different from other cards on this list that allow you to redeem your rewards whenever you'd like. That said, if you normally fill up at Costco anyway, the Citi Costco Visa is one of the few cards that actually allows you to earn bonus cash back at Costco. Wholesale clubs are typically excluded from bonus-earning categories.

Best Gas Credit Card for Hotel Stays: Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card
At one point, Wyndham's co-branded cards offered the highest return on gas purchases of virtually any card on the market. However, when Wyndham overhauled its credit card lineup, it decreased the earning rate on gas station purchases on several cards. That means we have a new leader when it comes to hotel cards for gas purchases.
The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card earns an impressive 6X points at U.S. gas stations. Although AwardWallet users typically redeem Hilton points for 0.62¢ apiece, if you redeem your Hilton points at high-value luxury hotels, you could potentially redeem them for 3.5¢ apiece or more. That's a return of over 21% on fuel purchases, but only if you can redeem Hilton points for top value.

Top Rewards Credit Cards for Gas and Fuel
At the time of writing (mid-July 2026), gas costs roughly $3.87 per gallon, according to AAA. Depending on how much you drive and how fuel-efficient your car is, you might end up spending hundreds of dollars per month on gas. It's advantageous to pay for your fill-up with one of the best gas credit cards to make your transaction more rewarding.
However, it's also important to consider what other bonus earning categories a card offers. What Purchases Are Included in the Gas and Fuel Category?
Most issuers define gas station purchases as transactions at merchants whose primary business is selling gasoline. However, there are some variations in what does and doesn't count — and how many rewards you can earn:
- American Express: Excludes superstores, supermarkets, and warehouse clubs.
- Bank of America: Includes marinas and fuel dealers but excludes EV charging from parking lots billing for vehicle charging and charging station installation.
- Chase: Excludes truck stops, boat marinas, oil and propane distributors, and home heating companies.
- Citi: Excludes warehouse clubs, wholesale stores, superstores, discount stores, department stores, and convenience stores.
- PenFed: Excludes airplane and boat fuel.
- U.S. Bank: Excludes wholesale clubs, discount stores/supercenters, grocery stores/supermarkets, truck stops, marinas, home heating companies, or other direct fuel, oil, or propane sales. Gas purchases over $200 on select cards do not qualify for bonus points.
- Wells Fargo: Excludes auto repair stores, car washes, warehouses and membership clubs, grocery stores, and superstores.
For peace of mind, you can also refer to AwardWallet's Merchant Category Code Lookup Tool to see how your purchase might reflect on your card statement before completing your transaction.

Final Thoughts
Choosing the best credit card for gas and fuel purchases depends on your spending habits, travel preferences, and whether you prefer cash back or transferable points. While several strong options exist, a few stand out above the rest.
For most consumers, the Citi Strata Premier is a clear winner as the best credit card in the gas and fuel category, earning an unrestricted 3X ThankYou Points on purchases at gas stations and EV charging stations — and it's not limited to U.S. gas stations, either.
If you're a Costco fan, it's hard to beat the cash back earned on the Citi Costco Visa. This card provides great value up to the $7,000 annual cap. Or, if you're a business owner, you shouldn't overlook the earning power of the Amex Business Gold, especially if gas is one of your main business expenses.
No matter how you spin it, there are so many fantastic cards you can use for gas or fuel. And picking one of these cards ensures you're not missing out on rewards when you pay at the pump.
