Best Buy is one of the largest electronics retailers in the U.S., with over a thousand stores across the U.S. and Canada. Its loyalty program, My Best Buy, lets members earn and redeem points. But like most programs, those points can expire.

Here’s what you need to know to avoid losing your Best Buy points.

Do Best Buy Points Expire?

Your Best Buy account will terminate if you have no qualifying activity on your account for 24 months. Once terminated, you will have 90 days to use any remaining points in your account; otherwise, they will be forfeited. Per the Best Buy program rules page:

“If your Program account is inactive for 24 months and you do not have an open My Best Buy Credit Card account, we will terminate your Program account…If you have points at the time we terminate your Program account, you will forfeit any points that have not been redeemed within 90 days of termination.”

Exemption to Best Buy's expiration policy

One thing to note from the above is that if you hold a My Best Buy Credit Card that is open and in good standing, your Best Buy points will not expire.

Best Buy Rewards Certificates Expiration

One potential use for expiring Best Buy points is to convert points to reward certificates. These have a hard expiration deadline and will expire on the date indicated on each certificate. Per the Best Buy program rules page: “Reward certificates expire at 11:59 p.m. CT on the expiration date shown on the reward certificate.”

So once you generate a certificate, make sure to use it before that date — even if your points themselves wouldn’t have expired otherwise.

Which Activity Prevents Your Best Buy Points From Expiring?

Best Buy is very strict about what qualifies as a qualifying activity to keep your points balance active. Essentially, you will have to make a purchase at least once in every rolling 24-month period.

While this may seem a little restrictive, consider that there are plenty of low-cost consumables that you purchase from Best Buy and keep your account active. For instance, you can purchase AAA batteries from Best Buy. Buying a box once every 23 months would help you keep your points active indefinitely.

Our Take

Best Buy’s points expiration policy is fairly generous, but you still need to keep tabs on your account. Making a small purchase every couple of years — or holding the My Best Buy Credit Card — is enough to keep your points from expiring. Just don’t forget about any reward certificates you generate, as those come with a hard expiration date.

AwardWallet Tip of The Day
Did you know that you have a personal referral link in your AwardWallet profile? If you invite people to AwardWallet using your referral link, you will receive an AwardWallet upgrade coupon for every five members you invite. Also, if these users upgrade to AwardWallet Plus, we will credit your AwardWallet account with AwardWallet Bonus points, which can be redeemed for points and miles in your program of choice. We spend roughly 50% of the revenue we receive from those referrals to purchase those miles for you. All of this can be tracked via the Invite to AwardWallet widget in the left navigation bar on your Accounts page.
