ANA Mileage Club miles generally expire 36 months after they are earned. However, some promotional miles may have different validity periods.

Here’s how ANA mileage expiration works — and how you can top off your account to use your miles before you lose them.

ANA Mileage Club Mileage Expiration Policy

ANA Mileage Club miles generally expire at the end of the month, 36 months after they are earned. Unlike many other loyalty programs, ANA does not reset your expiration date with account activity. Per the ANA FAQs page, standard (“Group 1”) miles expire as follows:

“Miles are valid until the end of the month 36 months after they are earned.”

For example, miles earned on January 15, 2024, will expire on January 31, 2027.

ANA also issues miles with different expiration rules under promotions or limited-use campaigns. However, unless stated otherwise, you should assume your miles will expire after 36 months.

Importantly, ANA does not allow you to extend or reinstate expired miles.

Exceptions to ANA Mileage Expiration

Most ANA Mileage Club members are subject to the 36-month expiration rule. However, there are a couple of notable exceptions:

  • ANA Diamond Service members: Miles do not expire while you hold top-tier status.
  • ANA Million Miler members: Miles do not expire once you reach this lifetime status level.

Can You Keep ANA Miles From Expiring?

Unlike most airline loyalty programs, you cannot extend the validity of ANA miles through earning or redeeming activity. ANA miles expire on a fixed schedule based on when they were earned.

This means that:

  • Flying with ANA or partners will not extend existing miles
  • Credit card spending will not reset your expiration clock
  • Transferring points will not extend previously earned miles

The only way to avoid expiration is to redeem your miles before they expire.

How to Earn ANA Miles

If you need to build your ANA balance to have enough miles before redeeming, there are several ways to earn ANA miles:

  • Fly with ANA or Star Alliance partners— including Lufthansa, United, and Turkish Airlines
  • Credit flights from select non-alliance partners — including Etihad, Garuda Indonesia, and Virgin Atlantic.
  • Stay with partner hotels, including Hyatt, IHG, and Marriott Bonvoy.
  • Shop through the ANA Mileage Mall
  • Rent cars through partner agencies
  • Transfer points from programs like Marriott Bonvoy and World of Hyatt
