AAdvantage has launched a new class of awards, the “Economy Web Special” award. The awards are available on select city pairings, and prices start from 5,000 miles for one-way awards in the main cabin. The awards will not replace the AA Reduced Mileage Awards.
Key Terms
- “Economy Web Special Awards” can be found through a redeem mile booking
- Prices start from 5,000 miles for one-way main cabin awards

- You can still book your seat at the time of making a booking
- Executive Platinum can request an upgrade by adding themselves to the upgrade list

Restrictions On AA Economy Web Specials
The program is subject to certain restrictions and bookings cannot be changed. While AA has not stated exactly what can’t be changed, we assume it’s a broad-ranging statement, and no changes can be made.
You can cancel your bookings and have your miles reinstated; however, fees will apply. To have your miles reinstated, you will pay $150 for the first passenger, and a further $25 for each additional passenger on the reservation. If you hold AAdvantage Executive Platinum, you will be exempt from the reinstatement fee.
Our Take
The introduction of these awards is welcome, although they are not exactly show-stopping. Booking an award for 5,000 miles that would normally cost you 7,500 miles is a welcome discount but is a little underwhelming. If you happen to be able to use one of the 17 pairings, then the Economy Web Specials awards are useful. Otherwise, you will probably have to wait for AA to add other pairings.

Need to book tickets from Casablanca to Madrid. Using chase Points
Wish they would extend these to smaller markets!
do they allow you to use the reduced mileage award code to further reduce miles off an economy web deal fare–as long as either the origin or destination is listed on the reduced mileage chart??
It does not apply to web deal fares. You might find an agent willing to adjust the fare manually if you call.
I hope this doesn’t eventually result in a program like Delta.
They could lead the way into low-cost airfare business.
They should really switch to the low-cost model. There’s no good reason for the US West Coast – East Coast tickets to cost almost as much as the West Coast – China tickets.
Not brilliant, but it makes the miles stretch that little bit further. Hopefully something will come along on the TATL routes!
I like the extra options. No changes? Eh. I see several good options for me, however, not where I really want to go.
Additional choices to use miles is always welcome.
How about business?
Thanks for the information!
I can see many of these being useful; nothing out of SAN so I will have to keep my eye out for other mileage deals. Also, I wish ICT went on sale more often; that small airport is so pricey it’s tough to make repeat visits to family.
No Philly. 🙁
Seems like a good way to fill some low load flights
Good promo, sometimes short distance doesn’t mean cheap flight.
Bummer. Nothing out of SFO or SJC.
Nothing useful this time around
PHX-HNL seems too good to be true.
It is nice of AA to come up with new ways for members to clear out their account balances instead of seeing the orphan miles expire.
Finally a decent way to burn my AA miles
Good to see more offers by airlines coming out, think competition in the industry are pushing these.
Nice offer, but looks like nothing available from NY to west coast.
A step in the right direction at least. More award availability in general would be better though.
Thanks for sharing these.
Flying out of ORD this is meaningless to me.
Have to agree. Why no ORD flights??
These clearly seem to be less traveled routes. No, ORD, NYC, Bay area, etc. And, it’s not surprising at only 5000 miles.
Wish there was more than one destination from charlotte. Hopefully more will be added.
Nothing for the CA bay area. thanks…
Wow! Nice to see these deals. I will have to see if I can make use of these options without being limited by restrictions
This are quite amazing deals for the right person — PHX to HNL for 5000 miles would be amazing. Of course, the restrictions make it likely that I won’t be able to take advantage, but if you were flexible, this would be a great use of miles.
nice deals, but nothing out of NYC
Thanks for pointing these out. Some of the 17 pairings listed are actually pretty decent. Nice to see something positive from AA once in a while.
“Awards are not subject to basic economy limitations”
Free checked baggage allowance included, for example?
I was wondering the same thing. Frankly some of these routes probably had not much traffic, they seem quite random geographically. It’s probably just made to say “look we are giving you good deals!”.
I don’t quite understand how this works, but I’d like my miles to be protected. Many thanks.
If one wants to spend 5 hours in coach, the Honolulu-LAX is not a bad deal
Great for families!
It would be nice if these special fares extend to flights to/from Canada.
Wish they had some from SLC, but still 5K ain’t bad for a short trip these days. Just have to watch the offers and strike when it works….
Thanks for this. It will be interesting to see if it is expanded further in the future.
