Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan has an interesting offer for flights to Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand. Mileage Plan members can pay up to 50% fewer miles for award flights or book revenue flights to earn double miles. This applies only to flights on Fiji Airways, and you need to book by the end of the month. Here's a look at the two parts of this promotion and what this can mean for your travel plans.

Alaska Airlines/Fiji Airways Two-Prong Promotion

This two-pronged promotion is running in partnership between Alaska Airlines and Oneworld connect partner Fiji Airways. It applies only to flights on Fiji Airways for the following routes:

  • California to/from Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific
  • Hawaii to/from Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific

Note that this excludes Fiji Airways flights to Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

Up to 50% Fewer Miles Promotion

If you'd like to book an award flight on these routes, you'll need just half the miles you normally need. Alaska Airlines publishes its partner award charts here. Here is the pricing you can expect during this promotion:

  • California to South Pacific
    • Economy
      • Standard pricing (one-way): 40,000 miles
      • Promotion pricing (one-way): 20,000 miles
    • Business class
      • Standard pricing (one-way): 55,000 miles
      • Promotion pricing (one-way): 40,000 miles
  • Hawaii to South Pacific
    • Economy
      • Standard pricing (one-way): 27,500 miles
      • Promotion pricing (one-way): 20,000 miles
    • Business class
      • Standard pricing (one-way): 45,000 miles
      • Promotion pricing (one-way): 40,000 miles

As you can see, the economy pricing from SFO or LAX in this promotion is a full 50% off the normal amount of Alaska Airlines miles you'd pay for Fiji Airways flights. California to South Pacific business class tickets are discounted by 27%. Pricing from Hawaii has the following discounts: 27% off economy flights and 11% off business class.

While we have listed pricing as departing North America, we also see the promotional pricing working in reverse (going to North America).

Double Miles Earning Promotion

If you're looking to book a cash ticket, there's something for you as well. You can earn double your normal amount of Alaska Airlines miles from Fiji Airways flights during this promotion.

This promotion applies to qualifying paid flights booked in J, C, D, I, Z, Y, B, H, L, O, K, W, Q, S, M, V, G, T, N, and R fare codes. Bonus miles do not count toward status. Miles should post 4-6 weeks after qualifying flights. You can see the mileage earning rates for Fiji Airways flights credited to Mileage Plan here.

  • You need to register before taking paid flights in order to earn bonus miles.
  • Flights must be booked by March 31, 2022.
  • All travel for this promotion must be completed by November 30, 2022.

Evaluating Flight Availability

The value of this deal depends on how easily you can find award flights or how cheaply you can book paid tickets. Let's look.

Discounted Award Travel

Departing Los Angeles (LAX) for Sydney (SYD), I see roughly 50% of dates in March-April, June-July, and October with award redemption availability for the promotional economy ticket pricing. Dates in May, September, and November have availability for the 20,000-mile awards almost every day.

For the 40,000-mile business class tickets LAX-SYD, I see availability on about 70% of dates August-November. However, March-July has very spotty availability.

Paid Tickets

If you're considering buying a ticket, how's the pricing? For round-trip economy fares LAX-SYD with a one-week stay, average prices are $1,000-$1,1000 during the promotion period. That jumps to a range of $4,800-$7,100 round-trip in business class, depending on the dates you select.

Turn This Promotion into Two Vacations

Going to New Zealand, Australia, or an island in the South Pacific sounds excellent. Know what's even better? Going to two of them on one ticket. Both Fiji Airways and Alaska Airlines have stopover policies you could use during this promotion.

We are big fans of Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan. Its miles are extremely valuable: AwardWallet users have averaged 4.46¢ per mile in recent redemptions. If you're considering the “use fewer miles” option for an award booking, this deal can get even better. Remember that Alaska Airlines allows stopovers, so you could potentially stop in Fiji then continue on to another island, Australia, or New Zealand without needing to pay any extra miles.

Fiji Airways has a stopover form here that can offer you two nights' free lodging in Fiji during a stopover. It applies to a maximum of two adults and two children. Take advantage of this and then continue your flights to another destination, thanks to a free stopover on the ticket and two free nights of lodging in Fiji.

Our Take

This is a really interesting promotion from Alaska Airlines and Fiji Airways. You can travel between Australia, New Zealand, or the South Pacific and Hawaii or California flying on Fiji Airways flights. If you pay cash, you will earn double your normal miles. For those who book award tickets, you can spend up to 50% less than normal. You'll need to book by the end of March and travel by the end of November 2022.

Which part of this promotion do you think is the better offer: the Fiji Airways paid tickets or the Alaska Airlines award tickets?

  • Hen’s teeth to find LAX – SYD in J for both sectors. Availability in J will show “mixed” cabin – longer flight in Y (coach) and shorter flight in J. so beware!

  • Martha Francis says:

Thanks for getting the word out! I found the article just in time…

  • Wow! Another member joining the One World circle. I like this! This is a nice bonus for people who like to travel (like myself). I have to say though, 2000 points for 4 segments is not that great. 5000 points would be a better incentive for people to book their travel.

  • Not a ton of points, but a nice bonus if you happen to be making the flights anyway! It’s a shame it’s not valid on award travel though

  • This is a lot of flying for just 2000 points. Nice if you have trips scheduled anyway I guess, but certainly not something to go out of the way for.

  • POOJA SAHNI says:

Not the best offer for 2000 miles for 4 completed segments. Shopping portals offer similar bonuses during the holiday season.

  • To be very honest not a great promotion
only 2000. But then again, you cant’ pluck feathers from a chicken filled;)))

  • The offer is not impressive considering you have to take two Alaska and two AA flights. Hopefully better offer soon! But it is great news that Alaska just joined Oneworld.

  • Think the Register link is broken and need to be fixed!

    Thanks for sharing though

  • Actually, you can register for this promo thru both Alaska airlines (earning 2k Alaska miles) and American Airlines (earning 2k Aadvantage miles). The Aadvantage promo may be targeted, but I got the email. I plan to take “advantage” of both promos, which will require 4 legs on Alaska flights (crediting two legs to Alaska and two to Aadvantage), and 4 legs on American (again, crediting two legs to Alaska and two to Aadvantage).

  • Wow, Alaska joining One World is excellent news. I can’t wait to fly them! Thanks for the update!

  • Pretty paltry bonus for taking 4 flights. Nothing to go out of your way for.

  • This is certainly a way to celebrate the newest addition to one world. I hope this will be a long and fruitful relationship.
