Who's Eligible for the American Airlines AAdvantage Cards?

Citi's only restriction on getting a sign-up bonus on its American Airlines AAdvantage credit cards is whether or not you've gotten a sign-up bonus on that card in the last four years. If you have received a sign-up bonus on one of these cards in the previous 48 months, you won't be eligible to get that same card. Here's an example:

“American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months.”

Each card has this same verbiage stating you can't get the bonus again within 48 months on that same card.

However, there is no restriction on applying for any of these cards if you already hold a different American Airlines card. Thus, you can get the AA MileUp Card if you have the AA Executive Card or AA Business Card, and vice versa.

In short, if you're applying for a card you've had before, you'll need to proceed carefully. Make sure that you no longer have the card, and ensure it's been at least 48 months since the last time you earned the sign-up bonus. Otherwise, you won't be eligible.

Additionally, there is a general rule with all Citi credit card applications. You can only apply for one personal card every eight days and can only open a maximum of two cards in a 65-day period. With Citi's business credit cards, you can only apply for one every 95 days.

Our Take

American Airlines AAdvantage co-branded cards allow you to bank a substantial balance of American Airlines miles, plus you'll get access to some fantastic perks and benefits when flying on AA. If you only fly American Airlines a couple of times per year, the AA Platinum Select is the perfect American Airlines co-branded card. Between the free checked bags and in-flight discounts, it's easy to justify the annual fee on this card. But you may want to move up or down in the perks department, depending on how frequently you fly with AA.

Whether you're an American Airlines fan or simply looking to diversify your points portfolio, there's an American Airlines credit card to suit your budget.
