Earlier this month American Express announced that Membership Rewards will add Aer Lingus as a transfer partner. No date has been announced for when this will happen, and Aer Lingus does not yet appear as a transfer partner on the Amex website.
Other Options To Aer Lingus
While the addition of another transfer partner to any flexible currency is always good news, this one is nothing to write home about, since you can already transfer Membership Rewards to Aer Lingus in a roundabout way.
Indeed, you can already transfer Membership Rewards points to Iberia and British Airways—both airlines and Aer Lingus being owned by the International Airline Group IAG, and all three sharing a points currency; “Avios”. This now allows you to transfer directly versus any round-about ways through Avios.com.
Our Take
The move will bring the total number of airlines you can transfer Membership Rewards points to 17. Hopefully, American Express will continue adding more airlines and other transfer partners. Ultimately, the more travel partners a points currency has, the more valuable it is.

Great! It would be nice if AMEX is accepted everywhere (just like VISA and MC)
Always nice to have more options, but I won’t be using Aer Lingus
More Partners = Great News!
Glad to see more partners. Just started using AmEx again after many years on not using the card.
I can’t really tell if this partner will make a difference. The nice thing is that it’s already a Chase UR transfer partner (as are BA and Iberia) so if you have a perfect redemption for this partner, you can transfer points from two different flexible point programs. (I’d guess you can transfer them from Marriott points also) The question is: Does Aer Lingus have fewer fees than BA? Because BA and their ridiculous fees are the reason I don’t use that program very much. (Though I’m aware of the fact that if you don’t use their metal, it’s not an issue.
At least they aren’t taking away partners… but this addition doesn’t really make any difference to me.
good to have a new avios partner, they may enable transfer promo etc…
Does it really matter having another Avios partner?
With subtle differences, it could matter. However, for most (including myself) it isn’t anything to care about it.
Considering the transfer in Iberia, BA and Aer Lingus.
This possibility doesn’t add something really valuable.
New Partners are always great news!
Time to learn about another award redemption partner!
This is good news… I want my points to be as flexible as possible. Thanks for the update.
This is a pretty pointless addition by Amex, as is mentioned you can already transfer into Avios via British Airways or Iberia.
Hopefully though they might decide to offer a bonus to launch the ‘new’ partner.
It’s kind of pointless to add it, but another way to see it is that it was an abberation with it not being available in the first place when the other Avios options were.
Good to know, but doesn’t really move the needle in terms of interest…
Good news indeed. Please keep the good news coming
At the end of the day, the more the better…as noted. So good deal.
This is a good thing as American express points are more valuable the more transfer partners they have.
It appears that Amex is becoming the better of the two points cards when compared to chase ur.
Why would you say that? This addition is nothing special. Where do you see the big value in it?
Mint is the best transcon of all
Ireland here we come
You’re booking Ireland purely due to this new partner? Why is that? You could have done such a booking just as easily with BA Avios or Iberia Avios.
New and more Partners is always a PLUS!
That is truly fanastic because of the share feature of the Avio program.
Kind of thought that meant that this doesn’t really matter since Avios was already a MR transfer partner?
