While this promotion has ended, airline shopping portals regularly have promotions. Regularly check back on your favorite airline's shopping portal for future bonuses.

Earning points and miles through shopping portals is one of the easiest ways to pick up miles without flying. AA, United, and Southwest Airlines are offering various bonuses for shopping online through their portals, all of which are marketed as back to school promotions. It is a perfect time to pick up some bonus miles for already planned back to school shopping. Is it us or does this seem to start earlier each year?

American Airlines

Shopping Portal 2017 Promo - American

The AA offer runs through August 18, 2017, at 11:59 PM ET. The bonus is tiered, and you can earn up to a maximum of 2,000 miles depending on how much you spend. The tiers are as follows:

  • Earn 500 miles bonus for spending at least $150
  • Earn 1,000 miles for spending at least $300
  • Earn 2,000 miles for spending $500 or more

The offer is relatively broad-ranging, although you will have to check the specific terms and conditions to make sure the items you are purchasing qualify for the offer.

United Airlines

Shopping Portal 2017 Promo - United

The United “Back to School” promotion runs through August 18, 2017, at 11:59 PM ET. Similar to the AA promotion it is tiered and what you earn will depend on how much you spend. The highest level in the promotion will earn you 3,000 bonus MileagePlus miles. The spending tiers are as follows:

  • Earn 500 bonus miles when you spend at least $150
  • Earn 1,500 bonus miles when spending $350 or more
  • Earn 3,000 bonus miles when you spend $600 or more

As with all these promotions, some items will not qualify, so you need to make sure the items you are purchasing are eligible for the promotion. Once you have completed your eligible purchases, allow 8-10 weeks for the bonus miles to post to your account.

Southwest Airlines

Shopping Portal 2017 Promo - Southwest

The Southwest version of the “Back to School” promotion also runs through August 18, 2017, at 11:59 PM ET. Like all the promotions, it is a tiered earning promotion, with a maximum possible earning of 2,000 bonus Rapid Rewards points. The earning tiers are as follows:

  • Earn 250 points for spending at least $125
  • Earn 900 points for spending at least $300
  • Earn 2,000 points for spending $550 or more

You will need to check that your purchases qualify for the promotion, but items that do not count include taxes, shipping, gift cards and other cash equivalent items. Allow up to 10 weeks for your bonus points to post to your Rapid Rewards account after completing your purchases.

Maximizing Your Earnings

If you have significant purchases to make, you should consider spreading your purchases out over various sites to increase your return. Since once you hit the maximum spend for a promotion, you will not earn any more miles beyond the maximum.

Overall

These promotions are an easy way to top up your mileage and points accounts. Taking advantage of multiple promotions not only maximizes your earnings but can help keep your accounts alive, and prevent your existing points balances from expiring.

  • Bonus miles promos are a good way to pickup extra miles for shopping. Wish they still had ebay.

  • Thanks. What a great way to refresh my miles expiration. I am going to use this for AA and especially Southwest because I had to close my Chase Southwest card, and I don’t want my leftover miles to expire.

  • ANGELO FONSECA says:

We should consider this alternative when we need to complete the balance of miles.

  • Pretty standard offer but always good to get some extra miles

  • Lots of miles to earn! How does one decide? 🙂

  • I love these shopping bonuses. Just use the portal to do your regular shopping. It’s so easy!!

  • Nice little bonus if you are online shopping, but not really worth going out of the way to earn.

  • If you’re already shopping, portal deals are awesome. Easy way to make some extra miles for something you were already going to buy. Just make sure it’s something that you can’t get cheaper (stand-alone or with percent off coupons) elsewhere.

  • cool thanks!! I need to bump up some miles.

  • paying with giftcards will also qualify for portal earnings. lots of places to pick up discounted giftcards for extra value

  • Thanks, a great way to get some miles on things I need

  • I’ve noticed these shopping portals have promotions quite often. I get emails from them all the time

I took advantage of Delta and American’s spring offers, but they’re not much of a big deal unless I am planning to buy enough anyway.

  • Always nice when these deals come through perfectly timed with a large purchase you need to make anyways.

I usually stick to the UR mall, but these bonuses make even AA worthwhile.

  • With the lack of AA saver award availability I no longer go out of my way to earn AA miles. This could be a good deal for those who have kids going back to school.

  • Wish those low end thresholds were lower. Need an activity in my husband’s AA account but squeezing the pennies right now. In the past I swear they had lower numbers on the first step in these type of promos.

  • Shopping portals are such a great way of earning extra miles. I wish I had learned to use them years ago.

  • This is a worthwhile deal if you are planning on buying your children new laptops or iPads for school.

  • I was wondering if buying gift cards works to earn miles. Need some minimum spend for a new card.

  • Jimmie Lin says:

Great offer as always, but again one would not go on a shopping spree for just a couple thousand miles. If only the bonuses were higher 😉

  • Delta also has a similar offer.

  • anything suggested to buy for AA shopping portal? Need some points right now

  • I only wish I valued any of them enough that it’s worth spending that much money on certain stores and certain purchases.

  • Always love airline shopping portals, you will be surprised how quickly the points mount up if you use them regularly alongside your usual credit card points it’s a big win, win.

  • jason picker says:

Not bad if you are making the purchase anyway, but not worth spending extra $$ to get the bonus IMHO

  • I am making sure that I am using the shopping portals to buy my items now. United is the easiest, since I buy a lot on Amazon. So I use their app to get giftcards on Amazon and then use those but then JetBlue give miles if you go from a link after you sign in on their website. So double score! lol! I have used American’s portal several times already in the last few months. I’m shopping anyway and I still have been able to get my savings from the companies I have been using. Since I don’t have any credit card to transfer miles to American and I don’t fly very often, so I build my miles slowly and of course with you all! I SO love that you guys give American miles!

  • miskocina says:

Just remember that when using these airline shopping sites to increase miles, you usually don’t get miles for the packing and postage costs.

  • The shopping portals are great ways to build points and keep them from expiring in less used programs. BA often has highest return. Always check Cashbackmonitor to see which portal gives the most at the online retailer you plan to buy from.
Usually not a problem to get the points. SWA, AA, UA, BA always give the points. JetBlue Amazon I find that it is hit or miss. So much so that I would rather use SWA or AA portal to get less points with Walmart or Jet. Cause for sure will get them. Shame on you JB Amazon for not always giving up the points.

  • Still waiting for the last AAShopping bonus to post. Keep track of those because they are easy to forget about!

  • Great way to keep my account topped up.

  • I’ve been taking advantage (no pun intended) of this offer with American Airlines. I’ve been impressed with their wide selection of stores to choose from… and their prices are usually pretty competitive with Amazon.

  • Sebastian says:

I would need a few Points to keep my Southwest Account active – any Ideas on how to do it?
