AirAsia is an Asian low-cost carrier that serves a wide range of destinations across Southeast Asia and beyond. The parent company is headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and operates a wide range of subsidiaries across the region, including Thai AirAsia, Indonesia AirAsia, Philippines AirAsia, and AirAsia Cambodia.
Formerly known as BIG Points, AirAsia Rewards points are now the currency of the AirAsia Rewards program — letting you earn points and redeem them for award travel. Like most programs, it has its own point expiration policy. Here is all you need to know about whether AirAsia points expire.
Do AirAsia Points Expire?
AirAsia Rewards points expire 24 months from the date of issuance. Per the AirAsia Rewards membership agreement page:
“Effective 1st June 2019, airasia points earned from 1st June 2019 will remain valid for a period of twenty-four (24) months from the date of crediting of such airasia points into the Account and it will automatically expire and will be deducted from the Account at the end of 24th consecutive month thereafter.”
However, AirAsia Rewards points expiration policy may vary. In a catch-all term, AirAsia reserves the right to have different expiration dates for different points awarded in promotions and campaigns. Per the AirAsia Rewards membership agreement page:
“In addition to the standard validity period of AirAsia points as stated above, BL also retains the discretion to configure a different expiry date for different types of AirAsia points that are awarded under specific promotions/campaigns which may have a different validity period as determined by BL from time to time.”
Additionally, once expired, there is no way to reinstate your AirAsia points, and the validity of your AirAsia points cannot be extended.

Transfer Your AirAsia Rewards Points
It's important to note that if you have AirAsia points that are about to expire and you will not be able to use them, you can always transfer them to another AirAsia Rewards member for a fee. Transfer fees are charged in points based on predefined amounts, with options starting as low as 100 points for a small transfer. Per the AirAsia Rewards membership agreement page:
“Effective 18th January 2021, for a transfer fee, an AirAsia member is able to transfer AirAsia points to another AirAsia member pursuant to predefined denominations offered by BL at the AirAsia rewards Site.“
So, if you have a stack of points that are going to expire, handing them over to a friend or family member is always an option. Remember, your friend or family member doesn't even need to be based in Asia. Transferring your points to someone who will make use of them on vacation is better than letting them go to waste.

Our Take
AirAsia is a low-cost carrier with no presence in the U.S., despite AirAsia X winning approval to operate flights to the U.S. back in 2017.
As a result, most options for earning and burning your points are based in Asia. Due to this, it is difficult, if not impossible, to do much if you are not based in Asia. However, if you are a regular to Asia, then AirAsia is a great way to hop around Southeast Asia and keep earning and burning your points.
The best way to keep track of your AirAsia Rewards points expiration date is by using AwardWallet. The app will keep an eye on your balance and send you timely reminders so you can plan and take steps to prevent your miles from expiring.
