IHG has taken a unique approach with Cyber Monday, turning it into a week-long event. They are currently offering up to 15% off stays using points & cash. The offer is valid for bookings made through December 2, 2016, and are valid for stays through January 2017. There are a couple of blackout dates, which we've identified in the terms.
How Does the 15% Off Points and Cash Promo Work?
The promo is relatively straightforward. All IHG Rewards Club members are eligible for a 10% discount on the cash portion of a points & cash booking. If you hold the IHG® Rewards Club Select Credit Card you're eligible for an additional 5% discount when making a booking — for a total of 15% off.
A quick review of the terms and conditions, there are only two blackout dates — December 30th and 31st. In addition to the blackout dates, there are two IHG properties that are not eligible for the promotion, the Venetian, and the Palazzo. To book, all you need to do is head over to the IHG Rewards Club and book through your account.
Backdoor Way to Purchase IHG Points
If you are not looking for a deal on a night’s stay during the period of the promotion, then this deal is a great option to get a great rate on a points purchase. Although somewhat convoluted, it offers an even better value than the current IHG 100% bonus on points purchases.
To do this, you need to make a points and cash purchase and then cancel it. When you do this IHG does not refund the cash portion; instead, the cash is converted into points and added to your account. The quirk is how the points that are refunded are calculated since you are refunded the difference between the points paid and the total number of points needed for a free night’s stay. For instance, if you paid 40,000 points plus cash, and the room cost 60,000 points for a free night, you will be refunded 20,000 points regardless of how much you paid.
Since the cash portion is discounted by up to 15%, with some simple shopping around you can be refunded points which work out at 0.566 cents per point. This is even better value than the current 100% bonus offer, which works out at 0.575 cents per point. One note of caution is that if you abuse this system, you may find that IHG will suspend or even close your account. Apart from that; this is another great offer to use up some points over the next couple of months.
