How to Redeem Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints

Starwood Preferred Guest Starpoints are one of the most valuable rewards points you can earn. They have the flexibility of transferring to over 30 airline transfer partners at 1:1 ratio, members receive an additional 5,000 miles for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred, free night award rates offer exceptional value, and when booking an award stay using points, the fifth night is free!

And that is without taking into account the value of achieving SPG elite status.

Transfer to Marriott Rewards

Don't forget, you can transfer your SPG Points to Marriott Rewards at a ratio of 1:3. Those 35,000 SPG points instantly become 105,000 Marriott Rewards. At the same time, if you've got an excess of points with Marriott you can transfer them back to Starwood!

Free Night Redemptions

You can redeem SPG points at over 1,300 hotels and resorts worldwide. SPG has a stellar reputation for top-notch hotels with great service. Their hotel groups are: St Regis, W Hotels, Westin, Le Meridian, The Luxury Collection, Aloft, Sheraton, Four Points, and Element.

A huge benefit of the SPG loyalty program is that all award nights count towards SPG elite status. Reward nights start at 2,000 points a night (category 1 on weekends) and run to 35,000 points a night.

You can often find great SPG properties for a low price internationally. For example, the Westin in Phuket is a category 3 property, so you could book 4 nights for 28,000 SPG points, and then receive your 5th night free.

Receive the 5th Night Free

You will receive your 5th night free after making an award booking for 4 consecutive nights. The 5th-night free benefit starts at the category 3 level, or 28,000 points. Redeeming 5 nights at a category 4 property like the Sheraton Kona Resort in Hawaii would cost 40,000 SPG points.

Cash & Points Stays

A great way to maximize your SPG points is by using them with cash for hotel stays. Cash & Points stays start at only 1,500 points & $30.

SPG Nights & Flights

SPG Nights & Flights let you redeem your points for airfare (50,000 miles) and hotels (5 free nights). Night & Flights are 60,000 SPG points for category 3 properties and 70,000 SPG points for category 4 properties. You must call SPG at 1-888-625-4988 to make a Night and Flights booking.

Benefits from the SPG page:

  • Save 18,000 Starpoints at Category 3 hotels
  • Save 20,000 Starpoints at Category 4 hotels
  • Good for 50,000 air miles
  • Good for 5 Free Nights
  • Valid on all airlines with 1:1 Starpoints to miles ratios

Airline Redemptions Receive an Additional Bonus

A big part of what sets the Starwood Preferred Guest program apart from other hotel rewards programs is that it's actually a good deal to transfer your points out to airlines. You will even receive a bonus of 5,000 airline miles for every 20,000 SPG points you transfer.

This can be a great way to top off your airline's loyalty program balance for an upcoming award. SPG points transfer to over 30 airline partners at a 1:1 ratio (1:1.25 if transferring in 20K chunks), and SPG runs regular promos offering bonuses on top of the already fantastic transfer rate.

  • Love these cards. If you don’t have one, jump on it today!!

  • Looks like the SPG program is terrific, but I haven’t gotten this card yet. Seems like it makes sense to get those Chase cards first because of the 5/24 rule, but I’d love to work this into the rotation…

    • @Brian – If you sign up for the business card which is also at 35K it doesn’t count towards 5/24. get in before its gone and worry about the personal card later? Worst case you’re up an additonal 10K Starwood points vs zero additional.

    • If you’re at less than 4/24, you should definitely consider taking on this card now while you can still get the large sign-up bonus. Then apply for multiple Chase cards when you’re at 4/24 to get around the limit.

  • Get it while you can. With the merger, there’s no guarantee we’ll see this offer again.

  • Binita Patel says:

Great time to get this card, not sure if AMEX will still get to issue these cards after the hotel programs are merged in 2018!

  • Is there any word on when the SPG and Marriott programs will finally merge, and what the merged program will look like?

  • I signed up for the SPG card on Sunday and was immediately approved. Thanks very much for the head’s up on the high value of this card!!!!

  • thanks I got this offer already so no bueno for me.. but those looking to sign up.. Get on it!

  • This card is a must have. It’s a shame the Starwood program will probably be rolled in Marriott and get watered down at best. SPG points are #1 with me. Because of flexibility/value

  • This card has nice partners & Marriott. Got 30k bonus in 2016. I transferred to Marriott for SWA companion pass. 270k Marriott = 7 nt 1-5/ SWA 120k pts + cp waited until 3/17 as to extend 7 nt Marriott. I know one shot deal SWA program changes. Enough said card rocks get it before it’s gone

  • i got the offer with 35000 points after 3000 spend. Better than this but considering it will never come back, just go for it.

  • Better than the Marriott credit card sign up bonus and first year fee is waived

  • Prashant Gangwal says:

Great offer to bulk up on the Marriott points before this card is history!

  • ADAM PARSONS says:

Get in quick, thinking spg bonus sign ups may stop or reduce with the merger.

  • Can I get one of these I’m from the UK?

  • I’m so confused by all these offers. I just started traveling again with a new job and I’m trying to find the best program for me that would benefit my family. SouthWest seems to be the best fit for me, flying round trip every two weeks, and so far I’m spending a night or two a week in a Hilton property. But I’m not against switching to another program if it makes sense. I haven’t signed up for any new cards yet. I also own my own small and (so far) unprofitable small business.

  • Get on it people! Last chance for these offers.

  • argh! I already signed up for the chase card and am working on the dollar amount! Would not be able to do $4k and $5k :o( Everyone always says SPG is so good to have. Guess I’ll have to wait and see if something else pops up.
Is it still benefical to get it even if I can’t get the bonus?

  • Hate seeing this opportunity go by without jumping on it, as I’ve wanted to give this card a try for a while, but the problem with the Chase 5/24 rule is that it means you have to time the non-Chase cards just right relative to the Chase cards. Here’s hoping for another nice promo in 6-8 months when I can better schedule this card into my rotatio…

  • Jessica A Gonzalez says:

You can get two sets of bonuses if you sign up for the personal and business. They gave me two different SPG numbers but I’ve read it is easy to transfer if they are both your accounts

  • It’ll be a really sad day when this card gets discontinued as the merger between Starwood and Marriott makes further progress…:(

  • Great card. Has a permanent place in my wallet for as long as it’s around.

  • Any word on how long the transfer of SPG points to Marriott will last? I think one of the best point deals is being able to transfer 90k points to Marriott for their Hotel+Air promotion which nets you a week at a category 5 property and 120k miles in several airline programs (Delta, Alaska, Southwest, etc.), or 132k United miles. I wonder if I do the spending over the next 6 months to top of the SPG account if this redemption will still be available or if it will go by the wayside.

  • Thank you for the reminder – got my app in the last day and my card arrives tomorrow!

  • Bill from Maine says:

Wouldn’t the Chase 100K + 7.5K authorized user signup bonus for $5K spend roll over 112K Marriott points into 37K+ SPG points? This is a roundabout way of achieving a similar result now that the SPG card bonus is no longer available and you value SPG points.

    • It is indeed — just have to make sure you’re under 5/24 to get the Marriott card.

    • It is a good offer from Marriott (best I have seen actually) for the 107.5 with 5K spending. Would net 112.5k miles vs the SPG with 5K spending netting 120k, The one drawback to the Marriott is there is a $85 annual fee that is not waived the first year vs the SPG fee which is waived. In addition if you are spending at a Marriott/SPG property you get 2 points on the SPG card which convert to 6 Marriott points vs 5 Marriott points if you use the Marriott Visa. If you stay frequently at these properties that can add up over time.

  • This is a great card! I can only recommend it!

  • Rob Arias says:

I can’t wait to receive this card and get the bonus. Sadly I only got 1 but still 35k points will go a long way.

  • This was a good deal but the business card was too rich for my blood.

  • Jim Smith says:

Missed the promo. Shame on me. I have the Chase sapphire reserve and wanted to add this to my arsenal. Second best option to go for the Marriot card for 100,000k in points and then transfer to SPG points if I could?

  • 7 nights hotel and 120k miles here i come
