After a hiatus of a couple of years, elite status members can now apply for United luggage tags again. However, unlike before, tags aren't set out automatically. In addition, there are some other restrictions members need to know. Here are the details.

United MileagePlus request a luggage tag

United Luggage Tags

United luggage tags can be requested by all United elite status members — including Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K.

The last time tags were issued, they were automatically sent to MileagePlus members. This time around, members need to specifically request a luggage tag in their MileagePlus portal. Here's how to do so:

  1. Click this link for the United MyStatus portal.
  2. If you aren't already logged in, you'll be prompted to do so.
  3. Scroll down to the “Request a luggage tag” section.
  4. Click “Request Now” to begin your request.

Tag requests will be processed within 8-10 weeks.

Note that only United MileagePlus elite status members with a status for 2023 can apply.

A friend of mine tried to apply, but his status is only good until the end of January 2023. Because of this, the option to claim a tag wasn't available to him. It's worth noting that trial elite statuses are also ineligible to claim the luggage tags.

Is It Worth Requesting a United Luggage Tag?

United luggage tags are a nice perk, but they're just fancy tags for your baggage to show off your status. There's a chance your bags might get better service from United baggage handlers, but it's more likely that they will register an elite status from the barcode scan than from the tag.

The tag won't expedite or bypass the check-in process. The tag doesn't include GPS, so you should still consider purchasing an AirTag, Tile, or SmartTag to track your luggage. The tags also don't guarantee preferential treatment on your flight. However, you might get a small benefit if a flight attendant sees the tag while on the plane.

Our Take

United luggage tags are a fun little perk for United Premier elite status members. Just make sure you're aware of all of the benefits that luggage tags can and can't give you.

If you've already achieved elite status for 2023, you should be able to claim them. Otherwise, you might have to wait until later this year after you attain elite status to request them.

  • Neither my wife nor I, 1K and Platinum for 2022 and Gold and Silver for 2023 have an offer for luggage tags.

  • Peter Smith says:

These “Ego Tags” are more likely to make your bag a target, in my experience. Skip ’em! I’m glad they don’t automatically send them out any more, mine just went directly into the trash.

  • In your article about free united, luggage tags there’s nothing in the portal on United website that says how to accomplish this. Your article was very non-specific, and didn’t give any hints as to how to find the link to getting these luggage tags.
