The bulk of the holidays (and shopping season) may be over, but that doesn’t mean airlines want you to put your wallet away just yet! In celebration of the new year — or to encourage you to keep up the habit of shopping — several airlines are offering new bonuses for shopping through their online portals.
Here are the details on these promotions, organized by airline (with some general information that applies to all of the airlines’ promotions as well).
All airlines:
- Spend amounts don’t include tax, shipping, cash equivalents such as gift cards, etc.
- Returned and canceled items don’t count toward the spend amounts.
- Bonus amounts are not cumulative; if you qualify for the higher level, you’ll only receive the miles listed for that level.
- The bonus miles are in addition to whatever miles you earn through a purchase itself.
Interestingly enough, the spend requirements and bonus miles across all are the same, but the date ranges vary.
- Valid December 26, 2016, through January 8, 2017
- Spend at least $150 to earn 500 bonus miles
- Spend at least $300 to earn 1,000 bonus miles
- Valid December 26, 2016, through January 3, 2017
- Spend at least $150 to earn 500 bonus miles
- Spend at least $300 to earn 1,000 bonus miles
- Valid December 26, 2016, through January 6, 2017
- Spend at least $150 to earn 500 bonus miles
- Spend at least $300 to earn 1,000 bonus mile
We were hoping to see Delta and Southwest follow suit with these New Year promotions, but no luck so far. As always, we’ll keep you posted and let you know if that changes.

Surprisingly the bonus miles for shopping through United portal on Target.com posted within a few days. I don’t know if it is store related or United portal has improved.
These shopping portals are so difficult to use. Yesterday I was trying to shop through the United portal and had to log in three times before I can proceed. Even then I was not sure if it actually registered my United account. How long the miles will show up in my MP account? From some other posters it may take 8-10 weeks to be posted. It that true?
Yes, it can take this long. Sometimes miles will not post until AFTER a return period has expired.
Did the December version of this promo. Hopefully the bonus miles will post soon.
When I first got into portal shopping, it kind of felt like a pain in the neck. However, over time, after benefitting from such a small extra effort, I’ve integrated it into my lifestyle and now consider it second nature.
Shopping is always the easiest way to get miles, because you can get them for buying things you were going to buy anyway. If you buy a few cheap items, they will typical offer you bonus incentives, which you can then use for larger purchases.
I found out that although the American Airlines shopping portal when I click to open recognizes me and even at the top has my name and AA# and even the “log out” button – that’s NOT truly an indication that I am logged in!!! I have to click on “my account” and then it says I have to log in. BEWARE. I have missed out on many miles thinking that I was already logged in because it says it on the home screen that I am logged in, but in fact, I wasn’t!! By not clicking on “my account” and then logging in each time it’s been really disappointing. Learn from my mistakes!
The amount of miles offered per spend are the same but the time frames are slightly different. I would love to see inside the thought process of each of the three airline’s marketing departments. Why differing dates? Does anyone have insight into this? Thanks.
Huge fan of shopping portals. I really wish United’s would be better as its my primary carrier.
Great way to keep your miles from expiring too. United also offers some pretty rich miles per dollar spent, for example nike store is 20 miles per dollar, if you can extract 2 cents per mile from using the miles on united, thats the equivalent of 40 cents per dollar spent kickback plus the bonus miles, plus the credit card miles.
Don’t forget you can double up with a credit card on some of these deals!
I will definitely be taking advantage of these!
Nice; this has already been a pretty decent season for shopping bonuses, and it’s good to see some more.
I have given up on shipping portals I never seem to get the miles to post with out emailing CS.
Another great way to boost the already valuable Alaska miles haul, thanks!
New to Alaska miles and their shopping portal. Anyone know how soon miles get posted from portals?
Thanks for the round-up? Alaska, United, and American seem to have similar promotion cycles. Too bad Southwest isn’t participating this round!
I’ll be shopping with United
I would have utilized during holiday shopping.
There are still a lot of after-Christmas bargains out there!
Too bad that all my shopping is already done
Since Alaska’s miles are the most valuable and since their portal has the longest amount of time to shop to earn the bonus it looks like, once again, Alaska’s superior customer experience means that they get my shopping portal clicks.
it makes alot of sense to buy things your going to purchase anyway through an airline points rewards portal.
