Joining United's ‘Back to School' and Alaska's ‘Study Abroad' promotions, Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping® has unveiled a bonus campaign also creatively titled, ‘Back to School.' Running through August 15, 2016, Rapid Rewards members can earn a one-time bonus of up to 2,500 bonus points on qualifying purchases from the Southwest Shopping Portal.

Southwest Back To School Promotion

  • 2,500 bonus points when you spend $1,500
  • 750 bonus points when you spend $500
  • 250 bonus points when you spend $150

While the minimum spend is lower than both the Alaska and United promo's, it equates to fewer miles than the other two campaigns for the bottom tier. To max out the 2,500 bonus points requires a minimum spend of $1,500 but looking at the T&C's, there doesn't appear to be any restriction on how you construct that spend, per the promotion website.

“Qualifying purchases” do not include returns, cancellations, shipping and handling, taxes, gift card or other cash equivalent purchases, and certain products that are not eligible for bonus points.

The ‘products that are not eligible for bonus points‘ look to be the same products that don't qualify for Rapid Rewards in the program T&C's, so if you typically earn points on a purchase, it will count towards the required spend.

Bonus points earned from this promotion are in addition to the regular points earned on purchases in the portal and will count towards the Southwest Companion Pass. There is no need to register for the promotion and bonus points will post to your Rapid Rewards account around 8-10 weeks after the campaign ends.

Final Thoughts

For those looking to take advantage of all three promotions, it is time to get creative with your ‘Back to School' spending as the campaigns only run through until the August 12 (United), 13 (Alaska), and 15 (Southwest). That allows roughly 2 weeks to take advantage or all three campaigns.

Just remember to sign into Rapid Rewards Shopping® prior to making your purchases and double check they will qualify for the bonus points before you press go.
