Iberia has announced its latest promotion offering 50% off Economy awards from the U.S. to Madrid. On some routes, this works out to as little as 8,500 Avios each way. To take advantage of the promotion, you must complete your award bookings by December 31, 2018.
Iberia flies to six U.S. destinations from their hubs in Madrid and Barcelona, but this promotion seems to apply only to the Madrid routes to New York, Chicago, and Boston.
The full list of Madrid nonstop flights to the U.S. includes Boston (BOS), New York (JFK), Miami (MIA), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), and San Francisco (SFO).
Barcelona offers direct service to Boston (BOS) and San Francisco (SFO). New York (JFK) is scheduled to be the third nonstop from Barcelona, but that route won't be active until July 2019.
- Promotion is valid on bookings through December 31, 2018
- Promotion travel window is January 14, 2019 through March 31, 2019
- Receive a 50% discount on Economy awards from the US to Madrid
- Bookings must be on Iberia-operated flights
- Awards can be booked one-way or roundtrip

Boosting Your Iberia Balance
If you don’t have enough Avios for a redemption, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards to Iberia Plus at a 1:1 ratio. However, Amex points may take up to 48 hours to post to your account, while Chase transfers to Iberia are usually instant. It’s a good idea to do a test with the minimum transfer amount of 1,000 points to verify the instant-transfer time before moving all the points needed for your redemption.
You can stock up on Membership Rewards with The Platinum Card® from American Express, or American Express® Gold Card. Top cards for earning Ultimate Rewards include the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or the Ink Business Preferred℠ Credit Card.
Alternatively, if you have a healthy balance of British Airways Avios, you can also transfer them to Iberia. The process is pretty simple and can be done online. Lastly, if you still find yourself short for a redemption, Iberia will let you reduce the number of Avios needed by increasing your cash payment.
This is an exceptional value for travel to Europe if you don't mind traveling economy class. Unlike British Airways operated flights, Iberia has quite reasonable taxes and fees, with one-way costs from $75-110 per person.
January to March is clearly off-peak travel season, but with easy access to connect to other European destinations, this is a great use of 8,500 miles to get across the Atlantic.
