Aegean has announced a promotion awarding up to a 40% bonus on miles purchases. The promotion is tiered, and you will have to purchase at least 21,000 miles to earn the bonus. However, you will have to be relatively quick with your planning and purchase since the promotion is only valid through August 31, 2018.

Key Terms

  • The promotion is valid through August 31, 2018
  • Earn a bonus of up to 40% on your purchase
  • Miles are sold in blocks of 1,000 priced at €25
  • You can purchase up to 50,000 miles per membership year

The promotion is tiered, and the bonus is hard-coded into the purchase. Depending on your purchase, you will receive the following bonus:

  • Purchase between 1,000 and 2,000 miles, and receive a 20% bonus
  • Purchase between 3,000 and 10,000 miles, and receive a 25% bonus
  • Purchase between 11,000 and 20,000 miles, and receive a 30% bonus
  • Purchase between 21,000 and 50,000 miles, and receive a 40% bonus

Is It Worth It?

Aegean has a pretty generous partner award chart; one-way transatlantic awards in Business will set you back 45,000 miles, and 60,000 miles in First. Purchasing 33,000 miles for approximately $910 will yield a total 46,200 miles. That is enough for a one-way transatlantic trip in Business using Swiss, Lufthansa, Turkish, or a host of other carriers, which represents pretty good value for money.

Purchasing 43,000 miles will yield 60,200 miles including the bonus and will set you back approximately $1,223. That is enough for a one-way First class transatlantic award, which is a great value when you consider the cash price for the same booking.

Our Take

Aegean is often mentioned as one of the best Star Alliance programs to earn Elite status with. Like our favorite Star Alliance loyalty program EgyptAir, it does have some great value on redemptions. So, if you have some upcoming travel plans, you might want to have a good look at this promotion. It looks like the purchase is processed directly by Aegean; maximize your earnings with a credit card that awards bonus points on travel purchases.

I took a look at their route map. They have some very interesting destinations that might be interesting for future trips. I don’t think it would be worthwhile for me right now, someone who has more flexibility in their schedule could use the miles to their advantage. It looks like the miles will expire 12 months from no flight activity but it seems that miles can be credited from any Star Alliance Flight so it might not be too difficult to keep the miles from expiring.

  • George says:

I have been *G with Aegean a few years now and enjoy the program.

Just used 90,000 miles to book two Business tickets from Budapest to the US so the program is beneficial to me.

  • Cha says:

    such a hidden gem 🙂

  • miskocina says:

It is strange that you can have status with Aegean and never fly with them! It’s a great airline though, probably the best in Europe at the moment on shorthaul.

  • Beppo says:

You need to fly aegean to get the status, maybe the easiest staralliance gold to reach. earning/redeeming no problem.

  • Craig says:

Potentially quite interesting if you have some stranded miles from earning status on Aegean. Top up for a nice J or F one-way to get you close to Greece to start your next quasi mileage run for status…

  • JL says:

I heard many good storied about Aegean miles, maybe I’ll step my foot in this time.

  • Rosario says:

Actually, I some some spare miles in Aegean account.
I will check if buying some miles I can have a good redemption.

  • jm p says:

I’ve never really found it worthwhile to purchase miles unless you are a few away from a trip

  • kingroi says:

I would need to read and understand the Aegean program first, honestly, I never ssaw much info. about Aegean points/miles…

  • Sebastian says:

Would these Trips be useable with a Stop-Over?

  • KAP says:

I have some stray Aegean miles from years ago when there was some loophole for gaining Star Alliance status. Never have much luck finding award availability online, and the call center/email option is generally not productive.

  • Steve says:

Aegean is mentioned as a Star Alliance carrier. One of its mileage partners is Turkish. Turkish is in the One World alliance, right?

  • James says:

Do you still have to call their awful call center to redeem? Or can you redeem online now?

  • richard says:

I never see much posted re agean points/miles… are they really worth the effort? seems like I can get better value elsewhere

    • They’re worth the effort if the price makes sense to you. Look at the example given. Is that of any interest to you? If yes, then there could be value. If no, then move on.
