This IHG Points Purchase promotion has ended, however, you can still purchase IHG points.
IHG has announced its latest promotion offering a 100% bonus on points purchases. This is the second promo IHG runs this week, with a promo offering 25% discount on the cash portion of an IHG Points & Cash booking.
- Promotion runs through November 9, 2017
- Receive a 100% bonus on purchases over 5,000 points
- Maximum points you can purchase is 60,000 for a total of 120,000 with bonus
- Allow 24-48 hours for the points to post to your account
- Purchases a processed through points.com and will not earn you bonus points associated with travel purchases at a hotel.
Maxing out the promotion with a purchase of your maximum yearly allowance of 60,000 points will give you a total of 120,000 points for $600, which works out at 0.50 cents per point.
Oddly enough, we saw some weird pricing between the 23,000 and 26,000 point range, where it was actually less expensive to purchase 26,000 points versus 23,000 points.
Offer available for purchases made between 12:00 AM ET October 24, 2017 and 11:59 PM ET November 3, 2017 inclusive. This is an exclusive, non-transferable offer for intended recipient only and may not be forwarded. Bonus points will be awarded upon completion of the transaction. Bonus points will be awarded to the recipient of the points purchase. Offer is subject to change. Offer cannot be combined with any other offer. Only purchases made online are eligible for bonus.
Price includes all applicable fees. Purchased Points are not refundable and are applicable toward all IHG® Rewards Club awards. Members may purchase a maximum of 60,000 points per calendar year and receive as a gift a maximum of 60,000 points per calendar year. Please allow 24-48 hours for points to post and appear in the recipient's account. All other IHG® Rewards Club Terms and Conditions apply.
Is It Worth It?
If you are in the market to purchase IHG points at this minute, then you are better off using the cash and points purchases promo, if you are targeted. With this discount, when you make a purchase and then cancel the booking, you are refunded the whole value of the reservation in points. The additional points that cover the cash portion are equal to the full points cost of an award night less the amount of points redeemed. Using this promotion that runs through October 28, 2017, you can effectively buy points for 0.43 cents apiece. As an added bonus, since you are canceling a reservation, the points purchased do not count towards your annual 60,000-point purchase limit.
While it is good news anytime IHG runs a 100% bonus on points bonuses, this particular time it might not be the best deal since there may be a better option available. To really maximize your earning with this promotion, use your Chase Freedom Unlimited® card, which earn 1.5% cash back (or 1.5 Ultimate Rewards/dollar) which can be transferred to IHG when paired with premium rewards card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.
