Maximizing The Transfer Value
If you are thinking of transferring Marriott points, then you are better off transferring them indirectly, through SPG. From SPG, transfer to AA, since Starpoints transfer to AA at a ratio of 1:1 and for every 20,000 Starpoints transferred you receive a 5,000-points bonus. Marriott points transfer over to SPG at a ratio of 3:1.
Converting 120,000 Marriott points directly would net you 30,000 AA miles (24,000 for the transfer + 6,000 bonus), while moving the points over to SPG would give you 40,000 Starpoints, which can then be converted to 62,500 AA miles (40,000 base miles plus 10,000 miles SPG transfer bonus plus 12,500 miles from the 25% bonus). Routing the transfer through SPG will always yield better value than going directly in this case.
Whenever a hotel transfer bonus comes up, the first thing we think of is the Marriott Hotel + Air packages transfer. Sadly, the Hotel and Air package exclusion has taken a lot of the shine off this promo. However, if you have a specific redemption in mind like the AA reduced mileage awards, or if you're looking to top off for an award, then this transfer can make sense.
