Without a doubt, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan is one of the best airline award programs out there. Mileage Plan still awards miles based on distance flown, not a revenue-based one, and has reasonable redemption rates and great partners. Through July 31, 2017, Mileage Plan is offering a 5,000-mile bonus for signing up for for a new account and taking a flight with Alaska by September 30, 2017. Bear in mind that Alaska awards start at 5,000 miles which make this bonus great value.
What You Need To Do
To earn the bonus miles, all you need to do is join Mileage Plan and take a flight by September 30, 2017. Remember, you can take flights on either Alaska or Virgin America. However, ensure that the flight is operated by either airline, as codeshares with other airlines are not valid not work. Even if you already have a ticket booked during the promotion window, make sure to join MileagePlan before the date of your flight, and you can still earn the bonus miles, just remember to add your Alaska Number to your ticket.
Alaska Miles
5,000 miles can be a great start and go a long way, especially since Alaska miles do not expire as long as you keep your account active. In addition, if you have some other flights planned with Alaska partner airlines, you can earn double Alaska miles on those flights.
Overall
Alaska does have a habit of being quite generous with its members, and this is no exception. The company has made a concerted effort over the last few years to keep its customers happy, so why not join since more generosity by Alaska is probably just around the corner.

I should add that this combines nicely with the companion pass now offered with the BoA credit card. Unless the T & C’s forbid the bonus on the CP…
This is terrific. I have several family members that don’t have Alaska Accounts. Great tip, thank you!
Very angry I missed out on this bonus… I wish I could receive it since I had to cancel the flight I booked anyway
Too bad I don’t have any flights planned in the near future that I haven’t already booked on other airlines!
This is a Good News…time to plan a Trip Yeh!
I have already an account with Mileage Plan and received 10000 miles for my Virgin America account.
So I will not open a new account for that.
But some people will open a new account and then ask for a merge.
I find this not correct anyway.
I dont think you get the 10,000 to merge new accounts – just the ones that were already there
looking for an Alaska flight now. Thanks,
What is minimum age to sign up for awards points through Alaska
Very easy and straightforward offer! Thanks Alaska Airlines!
Very generous of Alaska . Sure to win customers this way.
first 10000 miles for existing members now 5000 for new members. This is very generous of them!
Hope there is no devaluation coming.
Thanks for posting, 5k alaska miles surely starts off my new account in the right direction. Now just what to decide to use the points for in the future, Alaska or partner alliances redemptions.
Thanks for the headsup, this is one of the few programs I haven’t joined yet. Will be sure to do so!
Thanks for sharing this, just signed up and looking for a ticket to find out for myself why Alaska’s got such a great reputation in the points community.
They seem to have some unique point bonus promos (like solar installation) here: https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mileage-plan/use-miles/deals.aspx
Found this heads up in the app, thank you! Good reason to find out for myself why Alaska’s getting such good press in the points hobby.
They have some really cool bonus point promos (solar installation for one) that other airlines don’t here: https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mileage-plan/use-miles/deals.aspx
How timely! Just when I was considering opening an account.
Not bad, but not quite as good as Virgin America members got to merge accounts!
This is a very generous sign up bonus. Alaska do really give the mikes away in their promos, I got 10k miles a few months ago for transferring over from virgin america!
Great thanks!! I am going to look into this.
