Finding the best way to use your Flying Blue miles can feel like a moving target. Air France and KLM’s shared loyalty program uses dynamic pricing, meaning the number of miles you’ll need can fluctuate widely based on demand and travel dates.

That’s where the Flying Blue award calendar comes in handy. Instead of searching one day at a time, you can quickly view a month (or more) of results and spot the cheapest dates to redeem miles — potentially saving tens of thousands of points in the process.

Even better, there’s a clever workaround that lets you use the calendar to uncover cheap Delta award flights that don’t appear on most U.S. versions of the site. Here’s exactly how to access the Flying Blue award calendar — and how to use it to find some of the best mileage deals out there.

How to Access the Flying Blue Award Calendar

Accessing the Flying Blue open dates award calendar is quite straightforward. On the award search screen on either Air France's or KLM's website, you need to do (or not do) two things:

  1. Don't select a date, regardless of whether you're booking one-way or round-trip.
  2. Search for only one passenger. Searching for multiple passengers prompts Flying Blue to require a travel date or dates, which negates the first requirement.

Following these two steps should yield a calendar view of results.

Using the Flying Blue award calendar, travelers can easily view the lowest award prices for their itinerary of choice for more than half a year at a time. If you look at the calendar above, you will notice that the 4th and 13th are green — highlighting those dates as ones with the cheapest awards that month.

Along the top, it will show you other months with the lowest award prices for each of those months as well.

A Workaround for Finding Delta Award Flights

Unfortunately, the award calendar trick I've outlined here only works for KLM and Air France flights, not flights on partner airlines. That's a real bummer if you are looking to use your Flying Blue miles to book a Delta flight for fewer miles than you could with Delta's own SkyMiles. However, there is a sneaky workaround for this problem.

If you go to the KLM Netherlands website rather than the U.S. site (just be sure to change the language to English at the top). Again, leave the departure date blank, and suddenly you're able to find Delta flights on the award calendar.

Delta charges 25,800 SkyMiles for the same flight — making booking through Flying Blue much cheaper:

This award calendar trick makes it easy to compare redemptions and choose the best option for booking your Delta flight. For now, anyway, it seems you can only use this option to find Delta flights within the U.S. (including Hawaii) or to South America or Asia. It does not work on Delta flights to Europe.

Why Does This Matter?

Flexible travel dates allow travelers the best chance to score the best flights using points and miles. It also helps travelers take advantage of promotional pricing, such as the monthly Flying Blue Promo Rewards.

Accessing a calendar view of dates — including easily checking several months in a matter of seconds — makes the award search process that much more efficient. This is so much better than seeing just one day or week at a time.

Even better, using the award calendar to find Delta flights at lower mileage rates allows you to book even domestic trips for significantly fewer miles than Delta usually charges.

Our Take

Flying Blue’s award calendar is one of the simplest tools for travelers who value flexibility — and one of the easiest ways to stretch your miles further. Whether you’re hunting for discounted long-hauls on Air France or KLM, or trying to snag a cheaper Delta flight using Flying Blue miles, seeing an entire month of pricing at once gives you a huge advantage.

Combine this calendar trick with Flying Blue Promo Rewards or a transfer bonus from Amex, Chase, or Citi, and you could unlock serious value from your miles.

In short: if you collect Flying Blue miles, make the award calendar your first stop. It’s the fastest way to turn unpredictable dynamic pricing into an opportunity to fly farther for fewer miles.
