American Express just launched new limited-time offers on the Delta SkyMiles personal and business cards. All six offers are a huge improvement over the previous welcome bonus.

Remember, you're eligible to receive the welcome bonus on each individual card once per ‘lifetime'. For example, receiving the bonus on the Gold Delta Amex does not prevent you from receiving the bonus on the Platinum Delta Amex or the Delta Reserve.

To help you decide if one of these offers is a good fit, we've highlighted the benefits for each Delta card below.

This is the best SkyMiles credit card if you only fly Delta a few times per year. Highlights include the first checked bag free and priority boarding. And, unlike the free bag benefit on the United co-brand cards, you don't need to pay for the flight with your Gold Delta Amex to receive free checked bags. You can pay with any card and still receive the benefit just for being a cardholder. Plus, the annual fee waived for the first year.

Even better, you will receive a $100 Delta Flight Credit after you spend $10,000 in purchases in a calendar year. That's not a perk worth chasing on its own, but it provides an extra 1¢ per dollar spent in value on $10,000 in spending.

The Rolls Royce of Delta cards, the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card serves up complimentary Delta SkyClub access and features an annual fee that is almost identical to the cost of paid annual SkyClub memberships ($545). Plus, it comes with valuable perks. Redeem the Companion Certificate that comes with this card for a round-trip domestic First Class, Delta Comfort+, or Main Cabin companion fare.

If you currently hold The Platinum Card® from American Express—which provides SkyClub access as part of its extensive lounge benefits—the Platinum Delta Amex is probably going to be a better fit. That's because the SkyClub access offered on the Delta Reserve is the main difference in benefits.

If you're in the market for a premium Delta card but want to keep your 5/24 count to a minimum, the Business Delta Reserve is a better option than the Delta Reserve.

Final Thoughts

The increased welcome bonuses on the Delta consumer cards are some of the best we've seen offered on these cards, providing a ton of value well above the annual fees paid. That's particularly true on the Business Gold Delta Amex which features a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $99 (Rates & Fees). You receive an increased welcome offer plus all the perks and benefits—all without any out-of-pocket expense for the first year.

Regardless of your airline preference, any time a 50,000+ bonus is available you should look at your travel goals and see if they line up.

Remember, while it's not the best use of your miles, you can always use Delta's Pay with Miles option when award bookings are slim. This option gives SkyMiles credit cardholders the option to redeem SkyMiles at a penny per mile. Setting this as the minimum value of SkyMiles, you'd get at least $700 in free travel on Delta through these limited-time offers.

Personally I like Delta flights better than United. Just my home airport doesn’t have many Delta flights to choose.

  • Avatar

I like Delta’s international flights before pandemic, they even offer eye masks and ear plugs for economy cabins.

  • Avatar

My biggest issue with the Delta cards continues to be the fact that they are so awful for any type of regular spending. I can’t see putting any spend on them – even Delta spend (think CSR, AMEX Platinum, etc.).

    • Avatar

I agree. Its not worth it for Delta points when you can get 5x on MR points and transfer them to Delta. I dont put any spend on my Delta Gold. I use it for the free checked bags. One flight for my wife and myself pays for the annual fee and then some.

Delta is on my radar with the blocked middle seats, might be time for a change.

  • Avatar

Good for the companies that provide more benefits in this context of crisis (and increased tickets)

  • Avatar

While Delta is still maintaining its standard thresholds for attaining 2022 elite status, this might not be the most opportune time to obtain these cards as a means of elevating and/or maintaining one’s Medallion level.

Always a big fan of increased sign up bonuses. Sounds like a great time to sign up!

As things stand now, each person can receive a maximum of 480000 welcome bonus miles in their lifetime.

I’m flying Delta a lot these days and I’m becoming a big fan of their service, and the Clubs. I just can’t bring myself to divert spending from my flexible points to earning Skypesos. As tempting as theses bonuses might be, I’ll stick with the Amex Platinum for Membership Rewards and if I ever need Delta points, I’ll transfer them.

  • Avatar

Looks like flight prices are jumping so i need a new card to help with benefits! great post

With an offer like this with a specific, posted expiration date (4/28/2021 in this particular instance), is it better to wait a few days to see how other airlines’ loyalty programs might react?

    • Avatar

I’d give you a definitive yes. There’s usually no harm in waiting – unless maybe u have a big spend that needs to be done ASAP that you want to apply towards bonus qualification. But, this is a time of great offers across multiple cards, so I’d want to wait as long as possible to see as many card candidates as possible.
