Potential Downsides?

The only drawbacks commonly cited with the Business Platinum Card are the high annual fee of $450, which is not waived for the first year, and the lack of business categories for non-travel business spend. Other than that, the card is considered to be a great travel rewards card.

Excellent Travel Perks

First, you get an airline credit of up to $200 per year for incidental purchases made on the airline of your choice. This includes meals, movies, upgrades, internet service, and more. Some have even reported that you can even use the airline credit to buy gift cards from your designated airline. If you are a frequent traveler, this accounts for nearly half of your annual fee, right off the bat.

You'll also receive complimentary elite status in seven different loyalty programs including Hilton Honors, Starwood Preferred Guest, and Marriott Rewards.

As a cardholder, you have access to over 1,000 different airport lounges worldwide, allowing you to relax far more comfortably while you wait for your flight. This includes a full Priority Pass Select membership, and access to American Express Centurion Lounges, considered the best lounges in the US by most travelers due to the high-quality food and wine on offer, and even complimentary massages in some locations.

You won't have to worry about Wi-Fi access as this card comes with both complimentary Boingo service and GoGo Wi-Fi passes.

Another great perk offered by the Business Platinum Card card is an application credit for Global Entry or TSA Pre✓, once every five years, which has a value of either $100 or $85 and will add up over time if you take advantage of this perk.

Redeeming Membership Rewards

The Business Platinum Card works best when you use your points for travel rewards, either through the Membership Rewards portal or by transferring to travel partners. You can redeem for other rewards, including gift cards, statement credit,, and Uber purchases, but you get the best value using the points for travel.

You can transfer Membership Rewards points to Delta, British Airways, Singapore, Virgin Atlantic, Alitalia, Cathay Asia Miles, Etihad, Aeroplan, and many more. The hotel transfer partners are Hilton, Choice, and SPG.

The Business Platinum Card also gives you a 35% points rebate when you use Membership Rewards® Pay with Points for all or part of a flight with your selected qualifying airline, and all First and Business class flights available through American Express Travel. The limit to this benefit is 500,000 points per year.

  • Howie,

Some weeks ago I received a targeted offer for 100K points for the Amex Open Biz Plat, after 5K spend. Applied, got the card immediately.

A week later Amex sends me another targeted offer in the mail: same card 150K bonus, 100K after 5K spend, another 50K points after an additional 10K spend.

What is this ? That’s crazy? Can I really have two Biz Plat Cards and get both bonusses …?
I don’t believe so, because when putting in the RSVP code for the second application I nowhere see mention of the 100K bonus …

    Any comments?

I love my Business Platinum Card. I got the 100 000 bonus a couple of years ago and it continues to pay for itself with the benefits: Great Lounge Access, 35% points back on preferred airline and on all airlines in Business Class. My only frustration is that it was 50% of points back when I first got the card! I can confirm that I have been very successful in getting my Airline incidental 200 dollars credited from buying gift cards for my chosen preferred AAirline.

They will most likely match you to the higher offer.

  • great card. I got it when they ran the 150K MR points sign up bonus after 20K spend

  • Air Flyer says:

Seems like a great card for business owners.

  • 100k is always an awesome bonus, but the $25k spend requirement is a little eye-watering… Hopefully we’ll see this offer again, as we have in the past, with a lower spend threshold.

  • Too bad they discontinued the 5% discount on Hertz

  • $25k spending for 100k miles seems a bit much, maybe one day when I am beyond grad student life =)

  • I see a lot of people having a biz Amex card. Nothing I can use and I like the partners with Chase better.

  • That’s a lot of spend but you do get a lot of points.

If anyone knows, I’d love to know why the Canadian version of this card (and the AMEX Rewards program) is so crappy next to the US version.

There are like 3 airline partners and 2 hotel partners versus the 15 or so in this program.

    • The credit/financial system in the US is so different than anywhere else in the world. It is the quirks of that system that make rewards programs like this possible and viable with credit cards. Simple as that. Look at UK, German, or Australian credit cards — same issues.

  • Sebastian says:

Yep – Germany, same issue….very few cards, even fewer bonuses..
