Capital One Card Application Rules

It's worth noting that Capital One can be a bit picky about card approvals. You will not be approved for more than one card in six months, whether it's a personal or business card. Additionally, you cannot hold more than two personal Capital One cards at a time. Further, most Capital One business cards report to your personal credit report. Make sure you're well acquainted with Capital One's application rules before applying for a new card. There's no use applying for a card only to be denied because you were ineligible in the first place.

Other Ways To Earn Capital One Miles

The only other way to earn Capital One Miles is by referring a friend to a card that you currently hold. The referral bonus depends on the card you have and ranges from 10,000 to 25,000 miles.

It's also possible to share Capital One miles with anyone. You don't need to add that person as an authorized user on one of your cards.

Ways To Redeem Capital One Miles

There are quite a few ways to redeem Capital One miles, and you can maximize their value by choosing how to spend them.

First, you can use them as a credit against recent travel purchases. This is similar to using them for cash back, except you're using them as a credit toward travel purchases made within the last 90 days.

Second, use your miles to book travel through Capital One Travel. You can search flights, hotels, and rental cars, then use miles to book. However, we don't recommend redeeming miles in the portal because you lose the opportunity to earn miles on your purchase. For example, Capital One Venture X cardholders lose out on 10x miles they could earn on hotels and rental cars booked in the portal. That's a huge amount. Instead, book travel in the portal using your credit card, then use your miles as a credit against the purchase afterward. This way you're still paying zero out of pocket, but you're earning miles in the process.

Third, transfer miles to 18 hotel and airline partners. We've collected our thoughts on the four most valuable Capital One partners, so you can learn how to get maximum value out of each point.

Lastly, you can redeem your miles for cash back or gift cards. Unfortunately, you lose out on a lot of the value by doing this; we don't recommend it.

Final Thoughts

Capital One makes earning and redeeming miles very straightforward. There are multiple personal and business card options, each with a set earning rate which makes them easy go-to cards. Choose the level of benefits you prefer and annual fee you're willing to pay, then start watching those miles add up.
