Over the last few days United, Alaska Airlines, and Southwest have all come out with their e-shopping portal promotions. Now American Airlines has done the same with what they are also calling the “Back to School” promotion.

AAdvantage eShopping Back to School PromotionAmerican’s AAdvantage eShopping promotion runs through August 21, 2016. You can earn up to 1,500 American AAdvantage bonus miles by initiating purchases through their e-shopping portal. To receive the maximum bonus, you need to spend $750 during the promotional period. You can also earn 700 bonus miles if you spend at least $300 during the promotional period.

No registration is necessary to participate in the AAdvantage promotion, but make sure to sign-in to your AAdvantage eShopping account before clicking on your favorite merchant to begin your purchases. The bonus miles will be awarded 8-10 weeks after the promotional period ends.

The shopping portals for all of these airlines are run by the same company, Cartera Commerce, so it is not surprising that they are all running similar e-shopping promotions tied to the new school year. What is interesting, though, is that they are all slightly different and, assuming you value miles/points from these programs equally, the promotion that works best for you would depend on how much you plan to spend.

The Southwest promotion is the most rewarding, offering 2,500 points if you spend $1,500 during the promotional period. At the same time, it also has the lowest minimum spend requirement to earn bonus miles, providing 250 bonus points after only $150 in spending. If you are spending anything in-between, those two amounts make sure to check which of these promotions will be the most rewarding for your before initiating your purchase. And if you are spending more than $1,500, consider whether you could earn bonus points from more than one of these promotions.

Bottom Line

E-shopping portals provide one of the easiest and most efficient ways to maximize points and miles earnings. Most major airlines and hotel chains have an e-shopping portal. Among the most popular ones in addition to Alaska’s, American's, Southwest's and United’s are British Airways’ Gate 365, Delta’s SkyMiles Shopping and Marriott’s Shop My Way. Among the flexible rewards currencies, Chase’s Shop through Chase is a great option. And if you are more interested in earning cash back for your online purchases, make sure to check out Ebates.

Regardless of where you shop online, always check first whether you can earn bonus points by beginning your purchase through an e-shopping portal. And when there are spending promotions like American’s Back to School, make sure to start all your purchases from the same e-shopping portal to earn even more points or miles.

I love and use the E-Shopping portal a lot, especially buying flowers. I find it an interesting option to give my friends on birthdays and earn miles to use in my travels. I also buy other things.
