Every time I see a good bonus on a credit card, my fingers get itchy. I'm ready to apply. I'm already dreaming of where those points and miles can take me. However, I always need to bounce back to reality for a minute. “Am I eligible for this sign-up bonus?” is an important question to ask anytime you're considering applying for a new card.
If you're considering the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® and its 60,000-mile sign-up bonus, you may wonder if you're eligible for this sign-up bonus. Here's how to determine your eligibility.
With these perks, it's easy to justify the annual fee of $99, waived for first 12 months.
- Free checked bags for you and up to 4 companions on domestic itineraries
- Priority boarding to help you win the race for overhead bin space
- A 25% discount on inflight food, beverage, and Wi-Fi purchases
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at restaurants
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at gas stations
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases

AA Platinum Select Basic Eligibility Rules
First, what does it say on the credit card application page? Let's check the terms for AA Platinum Select bonus:
“Offer Availability – American Airlines AAdvantage® bonus miles are not available if you have received a new account bonus for a Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® account in the past 48 months. The card offer referenced in this communication is only available to individuals who reside in the United States and its territories, excluding Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.”
Thus, the two biggest restrictions are that you can only receive the bonus on the AA Platinum Select once every 48 months and must live in the U.S.
Figuring Out When You Last Earned a Bonus on the AA Platinum Select
If you aren't sure when you last received a bonus on the AA Platinum Select, check your email. You may have received an email with the subject “Welcome to your new Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard” roughly one week after opening the card previously.
If you don't have that email, you also can check your online account at Citi.com, use the chat feature there, or call Citi to inquire. The more information you can provide during this conversation, the better. Come prepared with estimated timelines, the card number (if you have it), and your relevant personal details to help the agent track down the date you received this bonus.

Eligibility If You Also Have Another AAdvantage Credit Card
Many travelers have asked if holding the CitiBusiness® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® Mastercard® and/or American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® impacts their bonus eligibility on the AA Platinum Select.
Luckily, you can earn the bonus on the AA Business Card and AA MileUp Card without hurting your chances of getting a bonus on the AA Platinum Select.
In fact, if you are eligible for a small-business credit card, getting bonuses on all of these AAdvantage cards is a great way to rack up American Airlines miles. Unlike the limitation of having only one Chase Sapphire card, Citi doesn't force you to choose just one American Airlines card.
- Free checked bags for you and up to 4 companions on domestic itineraries
- Priority boarding to help you win the race for overhead bin space
- A 25% discount on inflight food, beverage, and Wi-Fi purchases
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on cable and satellite providers
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent at gas stations
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on select telecommunications merchants
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on car rentals
- Earn 2X miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases
- Earn 1X mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases
Are You Eligible If You Have Other Citi Credit Cards?
But what if you have Citi credit cards outside the American Airlines family? Does that change whether you're eligible for a bonus on the Citi AA Platinum Select? Luckily, it doesn't.
Citi uses a “family” rule for credit cards that earn Citi ThankYou Points, stipulating that you can't earn a sign-up bonus if you have opened or closed another credit card in that same family in the past 24 or 48 months. However, earning a bonus on one of these cards doesn't impact your ability to get the AA Platinum Select bonus.
Moreover, there are some unwritten rules to keep in mind for how frequently you can open Citi cards:
- One personal credit card every eight days.
- Two personal credit cards every 65 days.
- One small-business credit card every 90-95 days.
If you apply for more cards than these restrictions allow, your application very likely will be denied.

What If You're an Authorized User on Someone's AA Platinum Select?
You may wonder if you can get a bonus on the AA Platinum Select if you're listed as an authorized user on someone else's account already. Since you didn't earn a bonus and don't already have this card (you aren't the primary account holder), you should be eligible.
If your application is denied — for instance, stating that you have this card or received a bonus — this can be cleared up through a reconsideration call to Citi's customer service line.
Bottom Line
The AA Platinum Select is offering 60,000 for new applicants after spending $3,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. You could use this bonus to book some of our favorite AA sweet spots.
