The January 2019 Flying Blue Promo Rewards are now live. This month, all participating routes in North America are in business class, but unfortunately, there are no lucrative 50% discounts. The January awards are for travel between March 1, 2019, through April 30, 2019, and bookings must be completed by January 31, 2019.
Options For North America
There are three participating destinations in the U.S. and Canada. This month does provide some value if you are looking for premium-cabin transatlantic travel since all routes are for 25% off business class. The destinations are:
- Chicago ORD—With Air France and KLM
- Toronto YYZ—With Air France and KLM
- Calgary YYC—With Air France and KLM
Other Global Destinations
Typically, there are some excellent opportunities for travel from Europe to other worldwide destinations. The class of travel varies for each route. Sadly, only one city benefits from a 50% discount in the January Promo Rewards:
- St Denis (Reunion)
Other global destinations with a 25% discount include:
- Beijing, China
- Dubai, The United Arab Emirates
- Cairo, Egypt
- Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
- Lome, Togo
Within Europe, there are various options, with a few routes discounted by up to 40%.
How To Work Out The Cost Of Your Award
Flying Blue has developed an award calculator to indicate how many miles your ticket will cost. The calculator gives the standard pricing for the award, and then you will need to discount the figure by the percentage offered in the Flying Blue promo reward. For instance, Paris to Chicago with Air France will typically set you back 58,000 miles one-way in business class. With a discount of 25%, you would need 43,500 miles to book the same ticket.
Following the changes made to Flying Blue Promo Rewards in June 2018, you cannot make connections and still benefit from the discount, and you cannot use two promo reward destinations and benefit from cumulative pricing. If you wanted to travel between two Promo Awards destinations, for instance, Chicago to Dubai, you would have to book two separate awards: One from Chicago to Europe and then another from Europe to Dubai.
Key Points To Remember
- Flights need to be booked by January 31, 2019
- Bookings only valid if made via KLM.com orAirFrance.com; phone bookings are not possible
- Tickets cannot be canceled, changed, or refunded
Flying Blue Transfer Partners
If you are short a few miles, Flying Blue has a well-developed network of partnerships. Historically Flying Blue had a partnership with all four major transferable point programs, and since December 2018 you can also transfer Captial One points to Flying Blue.
Overall the Flying Blue Promo Rewards for January are a little disappointing. In previous months, we have seen far better choices from North America. Globally, the included routes and discounts are weak. That being said, if you are looking for premium-cabin transatlantic awards and the dates and destinations work for you, this could be a good value. Just make sure to book quickly since there are a limited number of seats available.
