Iberia-Operated Routes From the U.S.

This promotion is only available to U.S. and Spain residents and only on Iberia-operated flights. Spainish residents can use this promotion to fly anywhere that Iberia flies. But, U.S. residents will need to start their trip from an airport that Iberia serves.

Iberia flies to seven U.S. destinations from their hubs in Madrid and Barcelona:

  • Madrid (MAD) to Boston (BOS), Chicago (ORD), Los Angeles (LAX), Miami (MIA), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington DC (IAD)
  • Barcelona (BCN) to Boston (BOS), New York (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO)

Iberia Award Pricing

Iberia Plus uses a distance-based award chart. So, the award cost depends on how far you fly. In addition, Iberia has both peak and off-peak pricing. Thankfully much of the eligible travel period for this promotion is in off-peak dates.

After the 50% discount and during off-peak dates, routes under 4,000 miles in distance one-way will cost:

  • Economy: 8,500 Avios
  • Premium economy: 12,750 Avios
  • Business class: 17,000 Avios

There are five routes between the U.S. and Spain that are under 4,000 miles in distance:

  • Boston (BOS) — Barcelona (BCN)
  • Boston (BOS) — Madrid (MAD)
  • New York (JFK) — Barcelona (BCN)
  • New York (JFK) — Madrid (MAD)
  • Washington DC (IAD) — Madrid (MAD)

Boosting Your Iberia Balance

If you don’t have enough Avios for a redemption, you can transfer American Express Membership Rewards or Chase Ultimate Rewards to Iberia Plus at a 1:1 ratio. Or, you can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to Iberia Avios at 3:1 ratio, with a 5,000-Avios bonus for transferring 60,000 Bonvoy points.

According to AwardWallet transfer time records, transfers from Amex and Chase will post instantaneously. However, Marriott transfers take 1-2 days to complete.

You can stock up on Membership Rewards with The Platinum Card® from American Express, or American Express® Gold Card. Top cards for earning Ultimate Rewards include the Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

Alternatively, if you have a healthy balance of British Airways (or Aer Lingus) Avios, you can also transfer them to Iberia. The process is pretty simple and can be done online. These transfers may be instantaneous. However, transfer issues may take up to 5 days to resolve.

Our Take

Simply put, this is an excellent deal for award travel to Europe. Iberia already offers the best award pricing on off-peak award flights between the U.S. and Europe. After taking 50% off these already-low rates, these award prices are truly exceptional.

Of course, there's an elephant in the room. COVID-19 is currently severely limiting travel between the U.S. and Europe. While we all hope that travel will return to normal by early 2021, there's no guarantee that this will happen in time for travelers who want to take advantage of this deal. So, if you're going to take advantage of this promotion, make sure that you keep your travel plans flexible.

  • Believe there’s a minor grammatical error in added update. Wouldn’t otherwise mention, but it is now the first line, in bold, folks read. Probably should be “made by” instead of “made until.”

  • good promo but again its in the “i wish….” category for most of us. I suppose as soon as the COVID restrictions go away, so will these promos.

  • Are any of these Level flights? I thought Iberia long-haul into BCN was mostly Level.

  • I remember the last time Iberia had that promotion, AMEX had a transfer bonus to BA, which can be transfer to Iberia, so rates were even lower.

  • This is so cheap promo from US to Europe. But not want to go out during this period. Walk around should be fine.

  • It seems to me that IB has much a harder time to fill its seats than BA.

  • I don’t like Avios FFP. Expensive YQ fee for us. or your account will be closed if they think it’s not normal without any notice. You have to call BA customer and talk many times. The AA was much more better than that.

  • Great deal, shame we cant travel at the moment!

  • Amazing promo I’m looking at booking especially to use my Iberia Credit that expires 12/31!

  • This is a great deal! Hopefully, we’re able to visit Europe by then.

  • Interesting offer., for those who collect avios. The fact is that as the post remind us due to Covid 19 there are many restrictions between those countries , NYC is asking for quarantine and Madrid too plus is for winter period . But tempting . Thanks for posting

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

Probable when the election is over we can start travelling again and take advantage of this. I like what i’m seeing. We just need to hold on another month or so.

  • I have seen a lot of promos for less dollars and less miles to fly here and there and it’s at first a happy feeling and then I remember covid.
With all the requirements it’s just too much to try and fly to Europe. I am hoping that next summer there will be something to make it easier to travel to Europe. I am hoping to see my in laws without all the fanfare.

  • 8500 avios not bad, but then i will have to sell my kidneys to pay for their pathetic fuel surcharges.

( When will they go out of business? such poorly managed airline)

  • Michael R Karpiel says:

JT the promotion period is Sept 1 to Mar 15. In the Key terms you have Sep 1 to Mar 31 which is incorrect.

  • Very difficult to predict if we would be able to travel in March 21! The deal is amazing but the situation is so unpredictable I highly doubt anybody would take advantage of this.

  • I really want to travel, especially when promotions like these appear. Hopefully the pandemic ends and we can travel soon.

  • OOOH. Wish I could use AA miles here — but I’ve got no Avios or transferrable points to get into Avios 🙁

  • Looks like a good deal for those that can book with flexible travel dates.

    • The actual question now is whether the borders are “flexible.” I do not want to talk about the things that some governments that have recently gone rouge are doing on its borders nowadays.

  • Do these award bookings come with high fuel surcharges??

  • Juan Ignacio says:

Iberia’s C class is an excellent product, also Iberia always has excellents deals to buy Avios.

  • You hit the nail on the head with the elephant in the room. Just so much we don’t know that it’s hard to get excited about good deals sometimes.
