This IHG Points Purchase promotion has ended, however, you can still purchase IHG points.
Rarely does purchasing points from any reward program have much value. Typically it is always better to hold cash and earn your points in some other way. However, every so often an airline or hotel will put up a promotion that makes purchasing points very tempting, particularly if you have a particular visit or stay in mind. IHG is at it again is currently offering a 100% bonus on points purchased, which when combined with their PointBreaks offers can yield great value.
The exact bonus and how many points you need to purchase to earn that bonus may vary based on your account. We tested three accounts:
- All three accounts earned a 0% bonus when purchasing 1,000 to 4,000 points
- 2 of 3 accounts earned a 50% bonus when purchasing between 5,000 and 15,000 points and a 100% bonus when purchasing between 16,000 and 60,000 points
- 1 account earned a 50% bonus when purchasing between 5,000 and 20,000 points and a 100% bonus when purchasing between 21,000 and 60,000 points
If you opt to max out the promotion and purchase 60,000 thousand points, you’ll net 120,000 points for $690. Simple math gives us a price per point of 0.575 cents. A nice value, since IHG points are valued at around 0.7 cents – which translates to a saving of 20%.
So, Should You Buy?
While the current PointBreaks list of hotels is far from spectacular, keep in mind it rotates every quarter. Using your points with the IHG PointBreaks deal, you end up with a cost per night of $29; which is excellent value. Check it out and see if there is a destination and hotel that appeals to you from now till January 31, 2017. Then purchasing the points might be well worth your while.
Overall the points bonus deal does represent good value if you have a stay in mind, if not then buying the points speculatively is not worth it. Keep in mind, this certainly isn't the first time IHG has offered a 100% bonus on purchased points, so it may come back if now isn't the time for you.
