Is It Worth It?

Buying the maximum number of points for $690 will yield a cost per point of 0.575 cents. While this is good value it is not outstanding, if you want to maximize your flexible points, use a Membership Rewards earning credit card like The Platinum Card® from American Express. Either way, if you are going to make the purchase make sure to use a points or miles card to double dip and maximize your earnings. Keep in mind, the transaction is processed by points.com, so you won't earn 2x, 3x or 5x bonus on this as a travel/hotel purchase.

IHG Flash Sale September 2017 Total

While a cost of 0.575 cents per point certainly isn't bad, we wouldn't speculatively purchase. However, if you have plenty of IHG high-end end properties coming up then redeeming for points would work out in your favor. Alternatively, if you are a regular user of the IHG PointBreaks promotion, then picking up enough points for 24 nights for $690 is definitely a great value. Overall whether you take the plunge for this offer or not depends on how immediate a use you have for IHG points.

  • Some great hotel stay bargains to be had in the UK like 10k for one night so cheap.

  • I suppose making it a “flash sale” might tempt a few people to be impulsive. But, as you mention, it’s nothing special – especially since there seems to be a fair amount of stealth devaluation going on with hotels costing substantially more points…

  • thanks for the heads up!

  • I was just about to book a room for a couple of nights, and this promotion saved me about $100. Thanks!

Plus you can (at least try to) get some cashback for points.com purchases through a few shopping portals as well.

  • I’d love to use them on Bora Bora – but to me the Question always is: how do i get there cheap? Like its fun thinking about spending points on expensive Hotels, but first of all one has to get there – nonetheless, I will buy them this time 😀

    • Bill from Maine says:

Sebastian, do you have the Chase IHG card yet? There’s an 80K (my wife had a 100K offer when she logged into her account, applied and was approved) offer, 1st year AF waived for $1K spend. That’s 200K points for $690.00 plus $1K spending and it comes with a free night at any IHG worldwide property for the $49.00 AF renewal. You would have 4 nights after 1 year, more if you use cash and points. I’m seeing rooms starting at $800-$1,000 per night so this is a super cheap way to fulfil your quest.

    • Not possible to get there cheaply. And finding award availability also is near impossible.

  • Jacqueline parsons says:

Some savings to be made on rooms using this flash sale prices!

  • Bertrand Say says:

Only buy if you have a use for the points immediately. You don’t know when devaluation will happen.

  • This is good promo. However we have cash+points option which comes cheaper than this promotion. Are we better off with that option considering they are giving 10 % to 15 % discount on that as well sometimes.

  • great deals at times for 5k per night

  • Are IHG points transferable to any other major program?

  • You’re right! They have these sales all the time. I am noticing the trend now that I’ve been watching for a while. I will wait for the next one. Maybe this holiday season they will have a better offer. I do see a need for points with them for next 4july :o)

  • I think this offer is the norm now, so the points are less valuable.
It’s already a couple of years I haven’t found nothing in order to redeem the points, or maybe I should decrease my expectation of the value of the points.
Is it reasonable a value of 0.5 – 0.6 cents in your opinion?
Otherwise the only good value are the PointsBreaks. Next round should be in November.

  • 100% probably is as good as it gets. Good for topping up your account for a redemption.
