Even if you only fly with Delta a few times per year, a Delta credit card can save you money and improve your travel experience.

American Express offers seven different Delta SkyMiles credit cards for U.S.-based flyers. Each card has benefits and perks that can easily justify its annual fee depending on how often you fly with the airline. But with so many cards on offer, it can be hard to find which Delta card is right for your wallet.

In this post, we'll highlight the key benefits of each card to help you decide which is the best fit for your needs.

Overview of Delta Credit Cards

Amex offers a whopping seven different Delta credit cards. But, thankfully, it's a bit simpler than that. Delta offers four different levels of benefits and annual fees: Blue, Gold, Platinum, and Reserve.

American Express offers a consumer and small-business version of its popular Gold-, Platinum-, and Reserve-branded Delta credit cards. The seventh card — which is not available as a small business card — is the no-annual-fee Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card (Rates & Fees).

The spending bonus categories are the most significant difference between the business and personal cards. None of these cards are particularly lucrative for earning miles with your everyday spending, but the earning rates are included in the card summaries below.

In short

Don't have time to dive into all of the details? Here's an overview of which Delta card might be right for you based on its signature perk:

Want more details? We've got them. Let's break down the Delta credit card tiers, starting with the most popular Delta Gold-branded cards.

Delta Platinum Cards: Enhanced Benefits for Delta Frequent Flyers

The Platinum Delta Amex cards are significantly more expensive than the Gold cards, but they can offer an excellent return on investment for more frequent Delta flyers. There are two key benefits with the potential to make the annual fee worthwhile: the companion certificate and Delta's Head Start toward elite status.

First, you will receive a Delta companion certificate each year after renewing your card membership. This certificate can be used to add a second traveler to a domestic, Caribbean, or Central America round-trip ticket in Main Cabin economy. Taxes and fees still apply to companion tickets, but you won't have to pay the base airfare for your companion's ticket.

If you can use this just this one perk every year, it should be easy to justify the card's annual fee.

Cardholders can take advantage of additional statement credits for select dining and travel purchases. You'll receive up to $120 Resy credit (available as $10 per month), up to $120 rideshare credit (available as $10 per month), and up to $150 Delta Stays credit on eligible prepaid Delta Stays bookings each calendar year ($200 for the business version of the card). You'll need to enroll to receive the Resy and rideshare credits but not the Delta Stays credit. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

The Delta Platinum cards also offer solid value for anyone who needs help to reach the next level of Medallion elite status. Both cards offer a Head Start of 2,500 Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) each year and earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent on the card.

Key benefits for the Delta Platinum cards

  • Head Start: Receive 2,500 MQD boost to start each year.
  • MQD earnings: For each $20 spent, earn 1 MQD toward status.
  • Companion Certificate: Each year, when you renew your card membership, you'll receive a companion certificate that can be used for a domestic, Caribbean, or Central American economy-class round-trip ticket.
  • Application fee credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry.
  • Annual statement credits: Up to $440 in annual travel and dining credits.
  • Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Delta Reserve Cards: Premium Benefits for High Spenders and Delta Elites

The Delta Reserve cards have an impressive lineup of benefits, but the annual fee is a significant step from the mid-tier Delta Platinum cards. You might be able to justify the higher cost of holding this card for three reasons.

First, the Delta Reserve cards give the primary cardmember access to Delta Sky Clubs and the Amex Centurion Lounge when flying with Delta that same day. Card members get 15 Sky Club visits per Medallion status year and unlimited visits to the Amex Centurion Lounge. If you spend $75,000 or more in a calendar year, you can unlock unlimited Sky Club visits for the remainder of the current status year and the entirety of the next.

Just note that you cannot access the Sky Club if you're flying basic economy, and additional visits cost $50 per person.

The Delta Reserve cards also can help you qualify for Delta elite status without spending as much time or money on Delta flights. The Head Start perk offers 2,500 bonus MQDs each year. You can also earn 1 MQD for each $10 spent.

Cardholders are also eligible for up to $240 in Resy credits, distributed as $20 monthly, and up to $120 in rideshare credit, dispersed as $10 monthly. Additionally, you can receive up to $200 in Delta Stays credit each calendar year on qualifying prepaid Delta Stays bookings ($250 for the business version of the card). Enrollment is necessary to access the Resy and rideshare credits, but not for the Delta Stays credit. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Lastly, the Delta Reserve cards have an enhanced companion certificate that can be used for a domestic, Caribbean, or Central American round-trip ticket in First Class, Comfort+, and Main Cabin. The additional savings can justify Delta Reserve's higher annual fee if you use this benefit for expensive premium cabin airfare.

Key benefits for the Delta Reserve cards

  • MQD Head Start: Receive a 2,500 MQD boost each year.
  • MQD earnings: For each $10 spent, earn 1 MQD toward status.
  • Companion certificate: Each year, when you renew your Card Membership, you'll receive a companion certificate that can be used for a domestic round-trip in First Class, Delta Comfort+, or Main Cabin.
  • Delta Sky Club® Access: 15 visits per year; unlimited after spending $75,000 in a calendar year.
  • Four Delta Sky Club one-time guest passes: Can be used for non-cardmembers traveling with the primary cardmember.
  • Centurion Lounge access: When flying Delta the same day (Guests cost $50).
  • Upgrade Priority: Delta Reserve Cardmembers are prioritized over other SkyMiles members in the same Medallion tier and fare class grouping. Card holders without elite status are also eligible for upgrades after all Medallion members have cleared.
  • Annual statement credits: Up to $560 in annual travel and dining credits.
  • Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Effective 2/1/25, Reserve Card members get 15 Delta Sky Club® visits per Medallion® Year when flying Delta and can unlock an unlimited number of Visits after spending $75,000 on the card each calendar year. Learn more about Delta's status changes for 2024.

How benefits differ from Delta Platinum cards

  • Earn MQDs from spending twice as fast (1 MQD per $10 spent, rather than $20).
  • Delta Reserve companion certificate is valid for First Class and Comfort+; Delta Platinum is limited to Main Cabin
  • Delta Platinum does not have airport lounge access

Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card: Basic Benefits with No Annual Fee

The Blue Delta Amex is Delta's entry-level consumer card. This card doesn't cost anything to carry, but it doesn't offer many benefits.

One perk that does make this card interesting is Delta's Pay with Miles feature. This perk is available exclusively to Delta cardholders — including the Blue Delta Amex.

Pay with Miles lets you redeem SkyMiles (at a rate of one cent per mile) for any Delta-operated flight you could buy with cash. This is a handy workaround when the flight you want isn't available as a standard award ticket. However, there are far better ways to redeem Delta SkyMiles.

Key benefits of the Blue Delta Amex

  • No annual fee or foreign transaction fees (Rates & Fees).
  • 20% back (as a statement credit) on Delta in-flight purchases.
  • Redeem miles at a value of one cent each for Delta-operated flights using Pay with Miles.

Amex's Delta Card “Family” Restrictions

Another important note to consider when deciding which Delta card is best for you is that Delta and American Express introduced “family” language to each co-branded credit card in 2023. This may prevent you from getting the welcome bonus on certain American Express Delta credit cards, based on which other Delta cards you have had in the past.

Currently, the family restrictions are as follows:

  • Blue Delta Amex: You're not eligible for the welcome bonus if you have or have had the Blue, Gold, Platinum, or Reserve personal cards (or previous versions of any of these cards).
  • Delta Gold Card: You're not eligible for the welcome bonus if you have or have had the Gold, Platinum, or Reserve personal cards (or previous versions of any of these cards).
  • Platinum Delta Amex: You're not eligible for the welcome bonus if you have or have had the Platinum, or Reserve personal cards (or previous versions of any of these cards).
  • Delta Reserve: You're not eligible for the welcome bonus if you have or have had the Reserve personal card (or previous versions of any of these cards).

As of March 2025, there are no family restrictions on business versions of the Amex Delta cards.

Final Thoughts

The Delta credit card lineup is surprisingly well-designed, but deciding which benefits are right for you may take a little effort.

Occasional Delta flyers who often check bags can justify the Delta Gold Card or Delta Gold Business Amex‘s modest long-term annual fees and enjoy priority boarding.

More frequent flyers should also come out ahead by using the Platinum Delta Amex or Delta Business Platinum Amex‘s companion pass on a Main Cabin ticket each year — and potentially reach a higher level of Delta Medallion status with Head Start.

The Delta Reserve and Business Delta Reserve have a hefty price tag, but cardholders can enjoy many benefits reserved for Delta's most loyal customers at a significant discount. And with the option to make significant progress towards top-tier elite status through credit card spending alone, these cards can offer massive value to high spenders.

If your needs change over time, you should be able to upgrade or downgrade to one of the other cards by contacting Amex after your first year of card membership. However, changing from a consumer card to a business card or vice-versa isn't possible.
