You can now redeem your Citi ThankYou points at the Walmart cash register for your purchases. Cardholders do not need to register for this new functionality. Instead, you only have to use a qualifying Citi ThankYou credit card to check out.
How It Works
To take advantage of this function, it is pretty straightforward. All you need to do is follow some simple steps.
- Shop at a participating Walmart store.
- At the cash register, swipe your qualifying Citi ThankYou rewards credit card.
- Choose “yes” when the screen offers you the opportunity to redeem your points for your purchases.
To qualify, your purchase must be $10.01 or higher. Also, you redeem your points in blocks of $10 at a rate of 1,250 points per $10.

To redeem Citi ThankYou points at Walmart, you must swipe a card that earns Citi ThankYou points. That includes the following cards:
- Citi Prestige® Card [Closed to new applicants]
- Citi Premier® Card
- Citi Custom Cash® Card
- Citi® Double Cash Card
- Citi Rewards+® Card
- Citi ThankYou® Preferred Card [Closed to new applicants]
- AT&T Access Card from Citi [Closed to new applicants]
Is it Worth it to Redeem Citi Points at Walmart?
Currently, you can redeem 1,250 Citi ThankYou points for $10 of your Walmart bill. Although saving $10 may seem attractive, some simple math unveils what a bad deal this is. At this rate, you are cashing in your Citi ThankYou points for the abysmal rate of 0.8 cents per point. That is shockingly poor value and is less than what you would get simply cashing out ThankYou points.
Opting to cash out your Citi points — which isn't even the best value — you would still cash them in at a rate of 1 cent per point. That is 25% more than using them at Walmart.
AwardWallet users have been able to leverage their Citi ThankYou points for airline redemptions at an average value of 2.2¢ per point. That is more than double the rate you can redeem your points at Walmart.

Our Take
Although more options are always good news, this is arguably one of the least exciting additions to any program. There is a better way to use your ThankYou points in almost every situation — including simply cashing out points at 25% more value than what you'd get by redeeming points at Walmart.

A good tip for people who have multiple citi credit cards is to call their customer service line and combine your Thank You rewards accounts into a single account. This will let you transfer points earned from the Double Cash card to all of the Citi Premier airline partners if you have both cards. This will allow you to transfer points earned on the Double Cash card to airline partners as an example.
