For almost two years it has been possible to earn SPG points when taking an Uber. It has just been announced that the agreement on how you earn points will be changed starting February 1, 2017. Not only are there changes to the general terms of the agreement. At the same time, SPG is launching a promo with Uber for the month of February where you can earn more points.
SPG / Uber Terms as of February 1, 2017
The full (current and upcoming) terms and conditions can be found on the SPG website. The key terms are as follows:
- To benefit from the SPG & Uber partnership, you must register at spg.com/uber; it takes 24 hours for the registration to be complete. If you're already registered, you don't need to do anything.
- You must have one qualifying stay at an SPG property before you can start earning points.
- When you are not staying at an SPG property, you will earn 1 Starpoint for every $2 spent on Uber (Before February 1, 2017, you earn at a 1:1 ratio).
- When you are staying at an SPG property, you will earn 2 Starpoints for every dollar spent with Uber. Gold and Platinum members will no longer receive additional points as a part of their elite status.
- Earned Starpoints will post to your account within 2 to 4 weeks from taking a qualifying ride.
- You can only earn points on a maximum $10,000 of Uber spending in one calendar year.
February 2017 Promotion
During February 2017, you can earn additional bonus Starpoints on your Uber spending. The key terms of the promotion are as follows:
- The promotion runs from 12:00 AM February 1, to 11:59 PM February 28, 2017, local time.
- Bonus points are earned on rides that are taken during eligible stays only. When you are not staying at an SPG property, you will earn at the 1 point per $2 spent.
- When staying at an SPG property, you'll earn three additional Starpoints for a total of 5 Starpoints per dollar spent on rides with Uber.
Summary
It is sad when earnings get cut in any program. However, although the cost of earning Starpoints has doubled for regular usage, it has remained the same on earnings during stays at SPG properties. As an additional perk, the increased earning potential in February is a nice bonus to soften the blow of the doubling of the cost of earning. You likely weren't earning enough to have a significant impact on your SPG balance, but every point does count — now you'll be earning a bit less.

My husband and I were earning a lot of miles from this promotion.. shame to see the earning ratio drop..
Well, just as well.. we haven’t had a qualifying stay this year and also we moved to India.. so each ride is hardly worth $4.. so the point earning anyways would have been really low..
But none the less, it’s still a cool way to earn SPG points with ur Uber rides.. I see no downside for the customers from this tie up..
Starwood points are so difficult to earn already, guess it’s a good thing they are now linked to Marriott for status!
that’s sad. hope they won’t cut crossover rewards with Delta.
Glad to see they didn’t eliminate this! It’s been very useful so far!
I’m earning points with uber, but I have not stayed in a Starwood in quite a while (over a year). At what point to I need to have another stay to keep getting them?

If you are registered for the SPG-Uber benefits program, have met all eligibility criteria and have a Stay in a prior calendar year, you will be eligible to earn for all Uber rides from January 1st through January 31st of the current calendar year, but after January 31st of the current calendar year, you will need to post a Stay to your SPG Member account within the current calendar year (i.e. after 12:00 A.M. on January 1st of the current calendar year) to continue to be eligible to earn Starpoints in accordance with the SPG-Uber benefits program for the remainder of the current calendar year. Read the SPG-Uber benefits program terms and conditions for full details.
Lame. Hopefully uber’s other partners don’t also reduce rewards.
Thanks for the info. I will signing my SPG account with Uber pronto! Better something than nothing!
Devaluation is never good, but one has to assume that in this instance, the ability to earn Starpoints didn’t drive a significant amount of new, or additional existing customers to Uber, particularly outside of SPG hotel stays. Rather, it seems more likely that earning Starpoints was a nice new perk for existing users.
Decreased earning suck but it’s better than no earning at all.
Did not know that you could get any points with anyone with Uber! This is great! If I am already signed up with Uber though, how do I register with SPG? Can I even do that? So many Uber promos you have to be a new customer. This is wonderful to know. We have been upping the usage of Uber and Lyft during trips, rather than rent a car. Do you know if Lyft does anything with anybody?
Karen, in the post is a link you can use to connect your accounts. Here’s what Lyft does with JetBlue (https://awardwallet.com/blog/lyft-earn-hilton-points-delta-skymiles/) for airport rides.
thank you! thank you! thank you!
This is a shame, but to be honest it was such a low part of my overall earn I’ll barely notice and won’t decrease my Uber use, like I haven’t increased it by virtue of the current terms.
An SPG Plat75 such as myself drops from 4 points per $ to 2 during stays.
I did always find it amusing that I could take a Uber to the airport half way around the world, but if I checked into a Starwood property that same day, I would get the extra points. Must have been easier to implement then to try to limit Uber earning to the same city as the stay.
Well it is still extra earnings so better than nothing
considering that SPG points are so hard to earn, I guess a little is better than nothing.
Hmm… that’s odd that they want to make it more strict. I wonder why they are doing this. Probably wasn’t sustainable for Uber.
