This IHG Points Purchase promotion has ended, however, you can still purchase IHG points.

IHG has announced a promotion giving you up to a 100% bonus on points purchases. The bonus percentage is not guaranteed, but when you sign into the promotion page you will see what bonus you have been selected for. The promotion runs through August 22, 2018, and to be eligible for the maximum bonus you need to buy a minimum of 5,000 points.

Key Terms

  • Promotion is valid on purchases made by 11:59 PM ET August 22, 2018
  • Minimum purchase of 5,000 points to trigger the maximum bonus
  • Members can purchase a maximum of 100,000 points per year
  • Allow 72 hours for the points to post to your account

Is It Worth It?

If you max out the promotion and buy 100,000 points you will ultimately receive 200,000 points for $1,000. This works out to 0.5 cents a piece, which can be a compelling return based on your plans. If you have use for 200,000 points either through IHG’s quarterly Pointbreaks promotion, or for an aspirational redemption, 0.5 cents a piece is as good as it gets when buying IHG points.

Our Take

Buying points speculatively is rarely a good idea even if it may seem like a good deal — you're typically better off keeping cash in your pocket. That said, if you have a use for IHG points then this promotion is timely, otherwise you are better off firming up your plans before making a purchase.

Remember a 100% bonus for points purchases is a relatively common promotion with IHG and they run several per year, so you have the luxury of waiting for the next one. When in doubt, check out some IHG hotels redemption sweet spots.

  • Yes… no need to buy IHG points speculatively. Another deal will come along if you need it.

  • Bertrand Say says:

I would not do this unless you have something specific in mind already. Devaluation happens yearly.

  • Thanks . I need some points to top up .

  • Looks like you need to buy at least 26,000 points to get the 1/2-cent rate. perhaps, in the right circumstance.

  • Not big into IHG, so will pass on this.

  • Like most point offers “yawn”….. really nothing to get excited about

  • I am thinking about it, I am always afraid of another devaluation.

  • As always, never really that good a deal, no matter what. But if you need to top off, it’s worth it.

  • Thank you the heads up!

  • Sebastian says:

Im still with a ton of Points – and don’t use IHG any longer, im a Hilton Fan now..So have to either spend them on a great IC, an Island-Resort or on Point Breaks….I’ll find a way, but would not again collect that many points there

  • ron_vaughn@hotmail.com says:

a weak program compared to Marriott.

  • i’ll pass, but thanks for sharing

  • The_Bouncer says:

I totally agree. Don’t buy speculatively. These 100% offers are so common now that $5/1,000 can almost be considered a normal price for IHG points. It is a good deal IFF you have a clear and immediate use for the points. Better still, work the Accelerate offers. IHG has been throwing points around like confetti for the last couple of years.

  • I normally try to have points enough to buy two or three point breaks night, so let’s say 45000, just in case.
    If I I don’t have that balance I buy what i need.
Otherwise I have not found any good redemption (for my travel pattern) in the last year.
I heard someone who bought IHG points and transfer to United during a bonus campaign, but I don’t see that much value if you don’t have a specific redemption in mind.

  • Good promo if you need a top up or need to pay for a room as cheap as possible to status match.

  • As a general rule, I’m rarely a participate in miles or points offers where one buys them directly. Still, I appreciate the info posted here, as always.

  • andreas kahle says:

does this work in conjunction with the 20% off from chase card? In that case it may be worth buying for the bora bora properties

  • yes I took advantage of this! I am needing points with IHG for a trip soon and this will help.

  • I don’t really do much with IHG as I stay more with Hilton. My initial reaction was that even at half a cent it wasn’t good value, but when I looked further I have recently redeemed at a hotel for 15,000 points a night that would have cost me much more than $75, so there is value there if you look for it.

  • I have a possible redemption coming up. I’ll work out if this is worth it- thanks.

  • charles j says:

Thanks for mentioning that IHG promotions like this are common. It really seemed worth the risk of devaluation, but I guess I’ll wait and check it occasionally until I think the time is right.

  • seems like the norm now to get 100%

  • Yeah, and lately coincide with pointbreaks hotel list release…

  • I completely agree with your conclusion, buying points is never a good idea.. I have tons o them and i don’t even use them..

but I will log on to check my promo.

  • Can anyone confirm if the purchase codes as travel?

  • The new Point Breaks list is not very attractive and so also this promo become less interesting.

  • Phillip Hoare says:

Definately worth looking into, has anyone had success with redemptions?
