Update: Travelers can no longer earn or redeem Wyndham points at Marathon and ARCO gas stations. However, see below for other opportunities to earn bonus points on gas station purchases.

Wyndham Rewards is cutting ties with U.S. Marathon and ARCO gas stations.

January 2023 will be the last month you can earn Wyndham Rewards points. However, you will still be able to redeem your Wyndham Rewards points at participating U.S. Marathon and ARCO gas stations through mid-March 2023.

Per the changes in the Wyndham Rewards T&Cs page:

  • January 31, 2023 will be the last day to earn Wyndham Rewards points for fuel or other eligible purchases at participating U.S. Marathon and ARCO gas stations.
  • March 14, 2023 will be the last day to redeem Wyndham Rewards points at participating U.S. Marathon and ARCO gas stations.

January 2023 will be the last month you can earn Wyndham Rewards points.

Earn and Redeeming Points When Buying Gas

Fortunately, you still have plenty of options to maximize your travel rewards when you are next at the pump — including earning bonus points on Wyndham co-branded credit cards.

However, you will have to use a credit card optimized for spending on gas in 2023 to earn a multiplier for every dollar spent on gas.

Great options include:

Select Chase co-branded cards are also targeted to earn up to 7X points on gas station purchases through March 31, 2023. You need to register first before you'll start earning bonus points. We've got all of the details and links to register your card in this post.

Note that you can also redeem Citi ThankYou points at Shell, BP, and Amoco gas stations. However, we don't recommend it as you only get 0.8 cents per point vs. 1 cent per point by simply redeeming ThankYou points for cashback.

Our Take

Consider that the average consumption of a registered vehicle in the U.S. is 489 gallons per year per registered vehicle. Factor in an earning rate of two Wyndham Rewards points per gallon, and your points could add up. This is especially true if you used your car a lot and are filing up more than average.

Then, consider that Wyndham-free nights start at 15,000 points, and it is clear to see why losing this earning option is disappointing news. It is a blow for anyone topping up their Wyndham Rewards balance with gas purchases.

With that said, Wyndham credit cards continue to offer a compelling way to earn bonus points at all gas stations — not just Marathon and ARCO.

If you are a regular user of the Wyndham U.S. Marathon and ARCO partnership, make sure to put the termination dates in your calendar. Start planning now for your future gas purchases.

You will also need to finalize any outstanding redemptions you planned before March 14, 2023.
