Offers for the Citi Prestige® Card are not available through this site. Some offers may have expired. Please see our card marketplace for available offers

For years, the premium travel card conversation revolved around American Express and Chase. Citi previously offered the Citi Prestige® Card (RIP), but closed it to new cardholders in 2021. Finally, in July 2025, Citi launched the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card to compete with the American Express Platinum Card®.

While both cards offer premium travel perks, airport lounge access, and statement credits, they take different approaches to delivering value. So, which card is best for your wallet? We compare each based on key categories for travelers to see which is best.

Citi Strata Elite vs. Amex Platinum: Welcome Offers

The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card currently offers 75,000 points after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of account opening. Based on AwardWallet's average redemption value of 2.36¢ apiece for Citi ThankYou Points, that's worth around $1,700 in travel.

Citi has restrictions on who qualifies for the welcome bonus. Check out our Citi credit card application rules guide for details.

The American Express Platinum Card® offers as high as 175,000 points after spending $12,000 in eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Membership. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer. At AwardWallet's average redemption value of 2.06¢ per point, the full 175,000–Membership Rewards points bonus is worth around $3,600.

Amex also has restrictions on who qualifies for a welcome bonus. Check out our Amex credit card application rules guide.

Annual Fees

The Citi Strata Elite charges $595 per year. The Platinum Card® charges $895.

The $300 difference is large, but statement credits can help offset the cost — more on that in the next section.

Citi charges $75 per authorized user on the Citi Strata Elite. Amex charges $195 for each additional Platinum Card® for Authorized Users.

Winner: At face value, the Citi Strata Elite wins with its lower annual fee and cheaper authorized user cards. However, both cards offer benefits that can justify their costs.

Statement Credits

Both cards offer statement credits that can help offset their annual fees. Let's start with the Citi Strata Elite card.

Citi Strata Elite

The Citi Strata Elite hotel credit is worth up to $300 per calendar year on a single hotel stay of at least two nights booked through cititravel.com.

The Strata Elite Splurge Credit is worth up to $200 per calendar year at up to two merchants you choose from a list of five:

  • 1stDibs
  • American Airlines (booked directly with the airline)
  • Best Buy
  • Future Personal Training
  • Live Nation

You can change your selected merchants during the year, subject to the credit's terms.

The Citi Strata Elite Blacklane credit is worth up to $200 per year, split into $100 for January through June and $100 for July through December, on chauffeured rides booked through Blacklane's site or app. Unused credits don't roll over.

The Citi Strata Elite also reimburses your Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee.

Platinum Card®

The Platinum Card® offers an extensive list of credits, including:

  • Up to $600 per year in lodging credits, divided into $300 in each half of the year on prepaid Fine Hotels & Resorts, The Hotel Collection, or eligible Airbnb Luxe bookings through Amex Travel. The Hotel Collection and Airbnb Luxe require two-night minimum stays, and Fine Hotels + Resorts will have the same requirement starting January 1, 2027.
  • Up to $250 annually in statement credits for eligible Airbnb Experiences purchased directly through Airbnb after booking a qualifying prepaid Airbnb Luxe stay through Amex Travel.
  • $200 per year in airline incidental fee credits
  • $200 in Uber Cash ($15 per month, plus an additional $20 in December)
  • $120 Uber One membership credit
  • $219 for CLEAR+
  • Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee credit every four years.
  • $400 per year on Resy restaurants ($100 per quarter)
  • $300 per year in digital entertainment credits ($25 per month) toward eligible streaming and news subscriptions
  • $300 per year at Lululemon ($75 per quarter)
  • $300 per year toward Equinox memberships
  • $200 per year toward an Oura Ring
  • $155 per year to cover a Walmart+ membership ($12.95 per month)

Adding up the value of the credits makes the Platinum Card® look quite valuable, and Amex itself cites more than $3,500 in annual value. However, the actual value depends on which ones you'll use and how easily you can take advantage of them.

Winner: Platinum Card®. It offers more potential value in statement credits, although many have specific merchants, spending requirements, or redemption windows.

Citi Strata Elite vs. Amex Platinum: Earning Rates

Now let's analyze each card's earning rates for your spending.

The Citi Strata Elite earns:

  • 12 ThankYou Points per dollar on hotels, car rentals, and attractions booked through cititravel.com
  • 6 points per dollar on air travel booked through the portal
  • 3 points per dollar at restaurants
  • 6 points per dollar at restaurants during “Citi Nights,” which Citi defines as Friday and Saturday from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. ET.
  • 1.5 points per dollar on everything else

The Platinum Card® earns:

  • 5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on flights booked directly with airlines or through Amex Travel (on up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year)
  • 5 points per dollar on prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel
  • 5 points per dollar on eligible prepaid Airbnb bookings through Amex Travel
  • 1 point per dollar on everything else

Two differences stand out. The first is dining. The Citi Strata Elite earns at least 3X points at restaurants and up to 6X points during Citi Nights, while the Platinum Card® earns 1X. That could mean thousands of extra points per year depending on your spending.

The second is the base earning rate. The Citi Strata Elite also has an advantage on everyday purchases, making it a stronger option for spending that doesn't fall into a bonus category.

For spending in the Citi Travel portal, bookings can complicate elite-status strategies, as you generally forfeit hotel elite benefits and points on those stays.

Lounge Access

This category isn't even close.

The Platinum Card® has access to the Amex Global Lounge Collection, which includes Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs when flying Delta the same day (up to 10 times per year unless you spend $75,000 on the card in a calendar year), Priority Pass Select lounges, Plaza Premium lounges, Escape Lounges, and Airspace lounges, for a total of more than 1,550 locations worldwide.

The Citi Strata Elite includes a Priority Pass Select membership with access for you and up to two guests at no charge. Each authorized user ($75 annually) also receives their own Priority Pass Select membership with the same guest privileges. Like Amex's version, the Citi membership excludes Priority Pass restaurants.

Citi's airline lounge benefit is four Admirals Club passes per calendar year. Each pass admits one adult and up to three children under 18, and is valid for 24 hours. Eligible American Airlines or Oneworld travel is required.

Winner: Platinum Card® by a mile.

Hotel Benefits and Elite Status

The Citi Strata Elite has access to The Reserve by Citi Travel, a collection of luxury properties with extra perks, like complimentary daily breakfast for two, free Wi-Fi, a $100 experience credit, early check-in and late checkout when available, and room upgrades subject to availability. You must book an eligible Reserve rate through Citi Travel to receive these benefits.

Citi also offers The Hotel Collection, a selection of upscale hotels with benefits like daily breakfast for two, complimentary Wi-Fi, and early check-in and late checkout when available. Both collections require booking an eligible rate through Citi Travel.

The card does not offer any hotel status.

The Platinum Card®‘s hotel benefits are more established. Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings include:

  • One-category room upgrade when available
  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Noon check-in when available
  • Guaranteed 4 p.m. late checkout
  • Complimentary Wi-Fi
  • Property credit of $100 (or more), once per stay.

The Hotel Collection offers, for stays of two nights or longer:

  • Room upgrade
  • $100 property credit
  • Late checkout
  • Noon check-in when available

For elite status, the card now offers complimentary Leaders Club Sterling status with The Leading Hotels of the World. Sterling status comes with a 5% points bonus and five pre-arrival upgrades annually (subject to availability, of course).

The Platinum Card® also grants complimentary Hilton Honors Gold and Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite status after enrollment. Hilton Gold is especially valuable because it includes a food and beverage credit at eligible U.S. properties or continental breakfast at select properties outside the U.S., plus bonus points.

Marriott Gold is less useful, but still delivers bonus points and late checkout when available.

Avis Preferred Plus status, Hertz President's Circle status, and National Emerald Club Executive status round out the list for rental car statuses.

Transfer Partners

Both cards offer robust transfer partners, including several shared programs like Air France-KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer and Virgin Atlantic Flying Club. However, each has exclusive partners that may make one program more valuable for your travel needs.

The American Airlines partnership is Citi's signature advantage. AAdvantage miles are otherwise hard to earn through transferable currencies, and among the major bank programs, Citi is the only one that transfers to AAdvantage at 1:1. Other Citi-exclusive partners include Japan Airlines Mileage Bank and Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles.

Amex, meanwhile, offers exclusive access to programs like Delta SkyMiles, Air Canada Aeroplan and ANA Mileage Club. Aeroplan is particularly valuable for its flexible award-booking options, while ANA can offer excellent value for premium-cabin redemptions.

For a complete breakdown, check out our Citi ThankYou transfer partners and Amex Membership Rewards transfer partners guides.

Winner: Tie. Both programs have valuable transfer partners, and the better choice depends on which airlines and hotels you use most.

When To Use Citi Strata Elite vs. Amex Platinum

The Citi Strata Elite is a pretty strong contender for most spending.

It's a good choice for dining, especially during Citi Nights, travel booked through Citi Travel, and everyday purchases that don't earn bonus points on other cards.

The Platinum Card® is great for buying airfare directly from an airline, booking a Fine Hotels & Resorts or The Hotel Collection stay, and whenever you can take advantage of its statement credits, from Uber rides to Resy dinners to streaming subscriptions. It's also worth using for your wireless bill to take advantage of cell phone protection.

Does Carrying Both Cards Make Sense?

Most premium card combinations are hard to justify because the cards duplicate each other's benefits. The Citi Strata Elite and Platinum Card® overlap less than you might expect, making it easier to justify carrying both.

The Citi Strata Elite is a strong earning card with a modest credit package. The Platinum Card® offers broader travel perks and more statement credits but is less rewarding for everyday spending.

The combined annual fee is $1,490, so carrying both only makes sense if you can get enough value from their benefits to justify the cost.

When Neither Card Makes Sense

Neither card may be worth the annual fee if you don't travel frequently or can't take full advantage of the statement credits and premium benefits. Fortunately, you don't need to spend hundreds of dollars annually to earn valuable travel rewards.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is a solid alternative with a $95 annual fee, bonus rewards on dining and travel, and access to valuable transfer partners.

If you still want premium travel perks, consider the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card. For a $395 annual fee, you'll get airport lounge access, a $300 annual Capital One Travel credit, and 10,000 anniversary bonus miles.

Our Take

Both cards offer compelling benefits, but the better choice comes down to how you travel and spend.

Choose the Citi Strata Elite if you fly American Airlines, if dining and everyday spending make up most of your card use, or if you want a premium card with relatively straightforward statement credits.

Choose Platinum Card® if you value lounge access, if you fly Delta, or if the credits line up with your existing spending. The $895 fee is steep, and the base earning rate is poor, but the card offers an extensive collection of premium travel benefits.

The Platinum Card® is the more complete premium travel credit card. The Citi Strata Elite is the better value for travelers who don't need everything the Platinum Card® offers.
