Aeroplan has just announced a 30% bonus on hotel points transfers through April 17, 2017.
The Offer
The offer is valid through April 17, 2017. Like a lot of transfer offers, it is tiered, and you will only get the full 30% bonus when you transfer more than 200,000 miles. The transfer tiers and respective bonuses are as follows:
- 20% bonus on transfers between 2,500 and 99,999 miles
- 25% bonus on transfers between 100,000 and 199,000 miles
- 30% bonus on transfers above 200,000 miles
While the bonus is great news, the question remains, which hotel groups can you transfer points from? Luckily there is a significant number of major hotel chains included in the Aeroplan transfer bonus:
- Starwood Preferred Guest
- Marriott Rewards
- Hilton Honors
- Club Carlson
- Best Western
- Wyndham Rewards
- Choice Privileges
- Coast Rewards
- Le Club Accor
- Shangri-La
Once you have completed the transfer, expect to wait 4-6 weeks after the end of the promotion for your miles to post, although you should regularly check since more often than not they will post earlier. If your Aeroplan account is in your AwardWallet profile, we'll let you know when your balance changes.
Valuable Transfer Option from SPG and Marriott
Some of the best options for taking advantage of this offer is by transferring SPG Starpoints or Marriott hotel and air packages since Aeroplan is a partner.
Since SPG already has a transfer bonus of 5,000 miles for every 20,000 points transferred, 160,000 Starpoints will yield 260,000 miles—an effective bonus of 62.5%, which is pretty darn good.
Booking a Marriott Hotel + Air package can also yield great value, booking 7 nights in a category 1-5 hotel + 120,000 mile will set you back 270,000 Marriott Reward points. This will give you 150,000 Aeroplan Miles and a 7-night stay. If you top up the miles to hit the 200,000 miles threshold, you would end up with a 30% bonus and a total of 260,000 miles plus a 7 night hotel stay.
Summary
Apart from some of the transfer strategies above, what can make this offer really attractive is the fact that the bonus is earned on cumulative miles transferred. So, if you have a few thousand points languishing in various hotel programs that you are not going to benefit from anytime soon, it could be a good idea to consolidate them into Aeroplan miles and earn a bonus on your transfers.

Thanks, but I’ll stick to my hotel points as they’re more valuable in my opinion. Besides, 30% is not all that much
Aeroplan used to be a very good program but over the years it has become one of the worst.
Do not make the mistake of transferring points to Aeroplan, you’ll regret it.
I wouldn’t take such a stance, there is still great value to be had with Aeroplan.
I think Aeroplan had a big devaluation a couple of years ago. Moreover, a 30% bonus on a very inconvenient transfer make this deal all but a deal!
a great deal for SPG members.
Not a fan of transferring unless it is for a top up. As others say, we loose too many points in the transfer, even with the bonus.
I agree it’s not worth it. I’m passing.
Very little value to be found in Aeroplan due to surcharges. No-surcharge partners can also be booked elsewhere without the risk of being stuck with Aeroplan miles.
Give this promo a pass.
I don’t know what kind of ratio you get transferring hotel points to Aeroplan (including the 30% bonus), but checked out transferring to AA from IHG, Hilton Honors and Club Carlson. Like a previous poster said, usually not worth it (unless you get a significant bonus).
Thanks, I can see a few opportunities in the list of transfer partners.
Any sweet spots for Aeroplan?
we’re working on it — Europe on partners that don’t charge fuel surcharges comes to mind. Airlines included are Brussels, SAS, Swiss, Turkish, and United. While they do pass on surcharges for LOT, they’re relatively small compared to others.
Wait, Shangri-la is 1:1 also, so there could be value there as well.
I have to believe that the only program that this is worthwhile for, would be SPG. Anything else, and the 30% bonus won’t even make it a break-even proposition.
Not sure this is a great deal unless you’re short and need some to make the difference!
SPG transfers can be leveraged pretty nicely with this promo, but realistically how many people have sizeable SPG balances?
You can also use this promotion with mariott package (Hôtel + milles)
I usually find these not worth it unless you need to top up.
Wouldn’t this be better than doing it at a non-promotional time though?
Same here. You lose so many points in the translation.
