Airline shopping portals are a great way to pick up miles. While almost every major airline has a shopping portal that allows you miles, it is when they offer bonus miles for purchases that you can start to rack up the miles. As a Valentines Day promotion, both United and American Airlines are offering bonus miles for purchase through their portals. This promotion is hot on the heels of promotions the airlines offered for the New Year, and the previous Christmas shopping bonus, and before that a Thanksgiving shopping bonus. So, as you can see they are pretty regular and occur almost every month or so when there is some public holiday or event.

The Offers
Both promotions are relatively straightforward and have two tiers of earning, with the same spending thresholds and bonus miles for both United Airlines and American Airlines:
- Earn 500 miles when you make $125 of qualifying purchases
- Earn 1,000 miles when you make $250 of qualifying purchases
There is some minor variance with the validity dates of the offers, with the United’s offer being valid through February 14, 2017, 11:59:59 pm ET, while the American Airlines offer is valid through February 13, 2017, 11:59:59 pm ET.

Maximizing Your Earnings
If you are planning on spending around $500 or more between now and Valentine’s Day, then you can take advantage of both offers and split your earnings between both programs to pick up a 2,000-mile bonus. However, if you spend the whole amount with one program, you will only earn the maximum bonus once. So, spending $500 through a single portal will not give you the bonuses of 2X $250 spending.
Summary
Keeping an eye on airline shopping portals is an excellent way to maximize your points earning potential during the year. Every airline, from Southwest and Alaska to United and American Airlines have them. Most of these portals have regular offers almost every month or so to pick up bonus miles. Targeting your spending during these bonus offers can let you get a handful of extra miles throughout the year.
