Update: You can get a further 15% bonus through a deal OMAAT has arranged.
Avianca has announced a mileage sale where you'll receive up to a 125% bonus on purchases of LifeMiles. The promotion runs through September 18, 2018, and instead of a straight percentage bonus, it is marketed as a buy one get two plus an additional bonus. Time to get out your calculator.
- Promotion is valid on purchases through September 18, 2018
- Miles are available for purchase in blocks of 1,000 miles at a cost of $32
- The maximum number of LifeMiles you can purchase in a year is 200,000
The promotion is tiered and the more miles you buy, the bigger bonus you will receive. The bonus breaks down per the following table:
Keep in mind the percentage bonus applies only to the base number of purchased miles, not on the two for one total. If you purchase 200,000 miles you will receive a 200,000 miles bonus, then a bonus of 50,000 miles (25% of the 200,000 you purchased) for a total of 450,000 miles.
If you maximize the promotion and purchase 200,000 miles you will receive 450,000 miles for a total cost of $6,600. This works out at 1.4 cents a piece. Even though the price may seem high, it can represent some excellent value. According to the LifeMiles Partner Award chart, a First class award between the West Coast and Germany would set you back 87,000 miles plus taxes and fees.
Purchasing 200,000 miles with this promotion gives you enough miles for 5 one-way trips between Frankfurt and Los Angeles in First class. When you consider the cash price of these tickets, the $6,600 for these miles is a steal.
Maximizing Your Earning
Avianca process the miles purchases themselves, so your purchase should code as airline expenditure and should be eligible for a category bonus. If you go ahead with a purchase, use one of the best cards for travel purchases.
If you don’t have an immediate use for the miles, then it is best to hold fire on this promotion. We have seen LifeMiles promotions with bonuses of 135%, and even 145% in the past. Before making a final decision, it is worth checking out the various sweet spots of the Avianca LifeMiles program, and seeing if they match up with any upcoming travel plans you have.
