This Hyatt Points Purchase promotion has ended, however, you can still purchase Hyatt points.
Hyatt Gold Passport is advertising a 30% bonus on rewards points when you purchase 5000 or more points before June 15, 2016.
Although we don't recommend buying points for the sake of collecting them, if you have a destination in mind, or you can turn over a good value deal, it can often net you a fantastic return.
Hyatt Gold Passport allows you to buy a maximum of 55,000 points per account, per calendar year, so with the added 30% (or 16,500 points) you could max out this promotion for a total of 71,500 Hyatt Gold Passport rewards points costing $1320.00.
For our comparison, we only require 60,000 points which will cost $1107.00 or $369 per night when breaking it up into 20,000 point chunks.
Doing a quick dig into Hyatt room rates, we searched category 5 properties which are redeemable for 20,000 points per night, and turned up two real gems:
Hyatt Regency Newport
Punching in a three-night stay in July at the Hyatt Regency Newport returned a total of $2034.08 for the three night; that's a huge saving at over $900 off if using points purchased through this promotion.
Park Hyatt Mallorca
I did a quick double-take when the search results came back for the Park Hyatt Mallorca, as a category 5 it requires the same 20,000 points as the Hyatt Regency Newport above. But for the same three nights in July, the price comes back at a whopping $2435.17. Ouch. That represents a huge return if you are buying points with a 30% bonus, savings of $1328.
If you have Gold Passport Diamond status, it might make more sense to use Points + Cash redemptions. You can expect Diamond suite upgrades, stays will count towards elite status, and you will earn points on your stay.
Make sure you take into account when purchasing points that Hyatt uses Points.com to process the points purchase so it will not count towards travel category spend on cards with that feature.
Hyatt Gold Passport points are a pretty stable currency at their standard rate so with a 30% bonus on top this represents a solid investment.
As with all points purchases, it is not a wise idea to buy without a plan for redeeming them. Search first and make sure you can beat lowest available rates on the dates you want to stay, and factor in that you won't be earning points nor will the stays count towards achieving elite status.
