Update: Marriott and Chase have quietly extended the ending date of this promotion from September 15 to September 30, 2020. This post has been updated to reflect this change.

It can be hard to justify keeping a travel-focused credit card at a time when travel is on hold. Credit card issuers realize this, and most have made improvements to credit card earning rates and benefits to compensate for our new normal. And perhaps no bank has done more than Chase.

Just a week after announcing higher earning rates and new benefits on its Sapphire cards, Chase is back with new temporary spending categories on its Marriott co-branded credit cards.

Between July 15 and September 30, 2020, eligible cards will earn 10X Marriott Bonvoy points on purchases at gas stations and restaurants—including food delivery services such as GrubHub and DoorDash.

This new offer comes a few weeks from the end of another temporary spending bonus on Marriott's co-branded cards. Through July 31, 2020, most Marriott co-branded cards earn 6X Marriott Bonvoy points on grocery store purchases.

Key Terms

  • Earn 10X Marriott Bonvoy points on purchases at gas stations and restaurants
  • Restaurants include food delivery services such as GrubHub and DoorDash
  • Eligible for purchases made between July 15, 2020 and September 30, 2020
  • Valid on up to $3,500 in combined spending in the bonus categories

Unlike other temporary bonus categories offered by Chase, this promotion requires cardholders to “opt-in” to the promo. Cardholders can do so by registering an eligible card on this page. You'll need to enter your last name, last four digits of your Marriott co-branded card, and your ZIP code to activate the offer.

Eligible Cards

The following six Chase-issued Marriott co-branded credit cards are eligible for this promotion:

  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy™ Credit Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Premier Credit Card
  • The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Premier Plus Business Visa Signature
  • Marriott Bonvoy Business Credit Card

Chase has confirmed to AwardWallet that the Marriott Bonvoy Bold™ Credit Card is not eligible for this promotion.

Our Take

Marriott Bonvoy points are generally worth around 0.8¢—although some Marriott redemptions are much more valuable. That means the 10X earning rate earns you around an 8% return on your spending toward future Marriott stays. Or, you can transfer Marriott Bonvoy points to more than 40 airlines. That return rate earns these Marriott co-branded credit cards a place in your wallet for the two-month promotional period.

And these categories certainly meet the mood. While many travelers may not be flying soon, many of us are itching to take a road trip or splurge on a nice meal.

With that said, it's disappointing that the promotional period is only two months. We can hope that travel has returned to normal by mid-September, but that's seeming unlikely at this point. Hopefully, Chase will launch a new promotion on these cards in September to meet cardholder spending habits at the time.

Are you going to switch to spending on your Marriott credit cards?

Charles, “Between July 15 and September 15, 2020” is 2 full months, or 63 days to be exact, because it includes the whole days of July 15 (first day) and September 15, 2020 (63rd day.)

  • too short for me. but really good.

  • Not that it’s a bad thing, but there are so many temporary bonus offers that it’s hard to keep track of which card to use where.

  • CHARLES S COLEMAN says:

Not bad. However, it states that the promotional period is two months when in fact it is only 31 days. Yes it encompasses two months; July and August; but only a portion of July and of August.

  • I think the CSR bonus is still slightly better, but for those who value Marriott points more, this is a great promo.

  • Decent bonus for these hotel cards.

  • I have a Marriott Bonvoy premier card and it’s saying I’m not eligible for the promotion

  • dharmesh says:

I usually stay in Marriott hotels so this will be good. Just wish the promo was longer than 2 months because it would be better

  • Tried to register my Chase Ritz Carlton CC, but I’m getting an error that says I’m ineligible. Is this targeted? I don’t see any other comments of people getting turned away.

  • Michael Heffernan says:

It appears to be targeted because I am not eligible. I called and they also said that my account is not eligible

  • Only on Chase – 🙁
Sure wish American Express would add that option

  • Issuers ramping up the competition as charge volumes plummet. Always good for the consumer!

  • Nice deal if you have the marriot cards and want to put the spend on there instead of on a sapphire reserve. Really depends if you want as marriot or Ultimate Reward points.

  • I will probably put some on–and we have an adult child who does a lot of our grocery shopping who has an AU Marriott Visa so that will work out well!

  • Jennifer says:

I guess they are doing this in competition to the amex hilton promo.

  • Maryjane says:

All of my Marriott Cards are Amex issued so I am not eligible for this promotion. Maybe they will match Chase. Until then, I’ll keep buying my gas on the Sapphire Reserve Card with its recent increased 5x points for gas.

  • Linda K T says:

I see no language in the offer objecting to gift card purchases for those who want to take a risk.

  • Florencia says:

Two months of promotion is very little. In this context, all companies should offer promotions of at least 6 months.

    • I actually don’t mind 2 months. Because I assume, when the time comes, they’ll revisit the expiration or launch another promotion, if necessary. Our current reality, unfortunately, incredibly, is we still don’t know what 2 months out looks like. Hotels don’t know; I certainly don’t know. Regardless of how some people act, we’re all in this together. To some extent, everybody’s living month to month here, hoping for improvements. And, we’ve had some successes, but also made many unforced errors. At this point, I don’t mind being optimistic, playing it by ear and revisiting down the road. It’s what I’m doing in my life.

  • 10x point is not a bad deal at all
