Chase Pay and PayPal

The star of this quarter is the inclusion of Chase Pay and PayPal payments as bonus categories. This opens up the possibility of earning 5% on virtually every purchase, as long as you can use either service to make a payment. This quarter’s bonus category lineup is the easiest in recent memory to earn your full quota of cashback. (Here's our post covering historical Freedom Card categories back to 2014.)

Pair With a Premium Card for Higher Redemption Value

Earning 5x on purchases is an excellent return, but, you can only redeem those points for 1¢ each if you hold the Freedom Card as a standalone card. Giving you a 5% return on spending. You can get a much better return from your points if you also hold a premium Ultimate Rewards earning card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® CardChase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.

Transferring points earned on the Freedom Card to a premium card increases the value of each point to 1.25-1.5¢ when used to book travel through the Ultimate Rewards Travel Portal. Plus, when you combine points to a premium card, you also have the option to transfer Ultimate Rewards points to airline and hotel partners. Transferring points to partners typically yield the highest value for Ultimate Rewards points, particularly when redeemed for premium-cabin airline awards or luxury hotels.

Our Take

If you have the Chase Freedom® card, there is no excuse for not registering for the quarterly bonus categories. While the card has an impressive list of features and benefits (check out our full review) the rotating bonus categories are a great way to turn modest spending into significant rewards. Although the Freedom Card is marketed as a cashback card, the points you earn become far more powerful if you have one of the premium Chase Ultimate Rewards cards that can make points transfers to partner loyalty programs. If you haven't already, check out our comprehensive post on maximizing Ultimate Rewards partners.

Registering only takes a couple of seconds, and you will be on your way to earning 5% cashback. One thing to remember is to keep track of your spending, and once you have hit your limit, switch your spending to a higher earning cashback card like the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, which will earn you 1.5% back on all purchases.

  • Any idea when Q1 2020 categories will be announced? This quarter isn’t one I am able to utilize fully. Grocery stores, drug stores and office supply stores are much better for me. Thanks!

  • I never used PayPal very much before this quarter. Now that it’s a 5x bonus, Ive paid attention to all the places that it’s accepted. Lyft so far has been my favorite use but I’m sure there are many others.

  • Can you pay the PayPal invoice from a family member via PaypPal and the Chase card, and then earn 5% bonus subsequently?

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

I saw that purchases that go to your account between October 1, and December 31, 2019, are eligible for the bonuses. That is a perfect window of opportunity for Christmas shopping.

  • It’s a great program BUT be careful to check award categories. Department stores are limited to about 25 stores; KMart, Target and Walmart EXCLUDED as are discount stores except Nordstrom Rack and Saks Off Fifth.

  • This is a tough quarter for those that don’t use PayPal

  • Thank you for telling me about Chase Pay. I did not know of Chase Pay before.

  • I don’t understand why they are having a Chase Pay bonus when they are getting rid of Chase Pay soon.

  • Chase Pay is a great category bonus. Glad to see it again.

  • Dexter Ohama says:

Everyone is upping their game now that Xmas is upon us. I’m getting many deals on a daily basis but this one is the one I am signing up for & using. Jump on it while it lasts. Too good to turn away.

  • I register for these every time. This holiday I am finding it harder to get the bonus. I don’t use Paypal or Chase Pay really. I don’t really shop at a lot of retailers. It might just change a few options on where I buy a few presents this Xmas but not a big bonus to me this time. Oh well. They’ll come around to groceries again :o)

Though the bonuses are great. I really find that the Freedom Unlimited paired with Sapphire is where I really earn my points. I can see if you max out the bonuses on the Freedom where it would be good with a prem card to get the best usage. Would it be a safe bet to say that if you can’t really use the bonuses on the Freedom to have the Unlimited and a prem card?

    • Absolutely. I think lots of folks prefer the Freedom Unlimited / Premium card combo over Freedom because there is less to keep track of. The Freedom 5x is a bit more lucrative if you can maximize quarterly, but both are solid strategies. Also, folks spending more than a few thousand per month will quickly go through the $1500 quarterly max on the Freedom 5X.

  • 5% certainly gets my attention. Registered. Thanks.

  • Sounds like the usual program deal for 5%

  • When would the restaurant category be 5%?

  • Interesting that Chase Pay is a category when they’ve announced that it is going away.

  • Chase Pay and PayPal made it too easy… I’ve already maxed this quarter out.

  • You can link Chase Pay to Samsung Pay and get 5% back wherever Samsung Pay accepted too

  • Perfect, thanks for the heads up!

  • Does anyone know whether you will qualify for 5X if you pay taxes with Paypal linked to the Chase Freedom card? accepts paypal with a 1.96% fee.

  • I have Chase card envy. All these great offers and we don’t have the same credit cards available to us in Canada.

  • At least Chase Freedom allows you to earn 5% rewards for the whole quarter as long as you register by the deadline in December, as opposed to Citi Dividend, which only earns 5% after the date of registration.

  • says:

I think same like another used, the categories are usually released a few days to a week before the start of the new quarter.

  • Chase Freedom quarterly categories are my favorite for picking up some extra cash/points

  • I wish Chase would give a better category, personally, I don’t use Chase Pay much.
