You can now earn and redeem Avios for flights on Garuda Indonesia, thanks to the newly expanded partnership between Qatar Airways and Garuda. This means Avios collectors from British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, and Aer Lingus can effectively book flights on Garuda using their Avios balances.
Let’s take a look at how many Avios you’ll earn when flying Garuda Indonesia — and how many you’ll need to redeem for an award.

Earning Avios For Flights On Garuda Indonesia
Qatar Avios are earned on Garuda Indonesia flights based on a percentage of miles flown. And this further depends on your fare class. Here's how the earnings break down:
Travel Class | Fare Type | Avios Earned as a Percentage of Miles Flown |
---|---|---|
First | F, A, P | 250% |
Business | J, C | 175% |
Business | D, I | 150% |
Economy | Y | 100% |
Economy | W, B, M, N, K | 80% |
Economy | Q, T, V, H, S, G | 30% |
Keep in mind that Garuda’s international footprint is fairly limited. Outside of Asia and a handful of Middle Eastern destinations, its only true long-haul service is to Amsterdam.

The flight from Jakarta (CGK) to Amsterdam (AMS) covers 7,055 miles, so your Avios earnings will vary greatly depending on your fare class. For example, a cheap economy ticket might earn you around 2,116 Avios, while a full-fare business class seat could net you 12,346 Avios.
Redeeming Qatar Avios For Flights On Garuda Indonesia
For redemptions, Qatar’s standard partner award chart doesn't exactly apply to Garuda flights. In fact, the pricing for Garuda Indonesia flights is actually better than what's spelled out in that chart. Here's a partial award chart that we compiled with the new award pricing:
Route | Economy | Business Class |
---|---|---|
Jakarta (CGK) - Singapore (SIN) | 6,000 | 12,500 |
Bali (DPS) - Singapore (SIN) | 9,000 | 18,000 |
Bali (DPS) - Sydney (SYD) | 13,000 | 40,000 |
Jakarta (CGK) - Hong Kong (HKG) | 16,000 | 40,000 |
Jakarta (CGK) - Sydney (SYD) | 25,000 | 65,000 |
Jakarta (CGK) - Amsterdam (AMS) | 50,000 | 120,000 |
Consider your alternatives
On the Jakarta to Amsterdam route, you’ll need 50,000 Avios for economy or 120,000 Avios for business class. Taxes and fees vary depending on what country you're departing from. That’s pretty expensive for business class, but it could be worth it if you already have a ton of Avios and don't want to pay an otherwise steep cash fare.

But if you can believe it, you’d be better off booking this Garuda Indonesia award through Delta SkyMiles instead. Awards between non-U.S. countries remain one of the best sweet spots in the SkyMiles program.

You can also find plenty of short-haul awards within Indonesia and mid-haul awards to multiple cities in China. And on non-long-haul routes, the rates are much closer to what Delta charges — if not even better. For example, you can redeem 16,000 Avios for an economy award from Jakarta to Hong Kong or 40,000 for business class.

As you can see, it's a lot closer to what Delta charges for this same flight:

But these rates are easily surpassed by Air France/KLM Flying Blue. It's a prime example of why it always pays to compare.

How to Earn the Avios Necessary to Book Garuda Indonesia Awards
If you need to top off your Avios balance, you’re spoiled for choice. Travelers have plenty of ways to earn Avios, with one of the most efficient being transfers from several major credit card rewards programs.
On top of that, you can move Avios freely between your linked British Airways, Qatar Airways, Aer Lingus, and Finnair accounts. This makes it easy to take advantage of transfer bonuses (when they come around) and consolidate your rewards in one place. Speaking of which, here's a live-updating list of Avios transfer bonuses:
That said, if there’s one thing we know for sure about the Qatar–Garuda Indonesia partnership, it’s that Avios won’t always be the cheapest option. Depending on your route, you might find better value booking through one of Garuda’s SkyTeam partners, like Delta SkyMiles or Air France/KLM Flying Blue — and there are plenty of ways to earn Flying Blue miles, too.

No matter what, If you’re eyeing a Garuda Indonesia award, the best thing you can do is compare pricing across programs. Once you find a deal that works for you, you can transfer the points that make the most sense. That way, you won't end up redeeming more than you have to.

Our Take
The bottom line is the more options you have to redeem your points and miles, the better. And while the new partnership between Qatar and Garuda may be of limited value if you are based in the U.S. or Europe, it could be very useful if you are based in Asia or travel through the region frequently.
