AirFrance has released its July 2019 Flying Blue Promo Rewards.  Short- and medium-haul flights are discounted 20-40%, while long-distance flights are discounted by 25-50%. Discounts are available in economy and business class. Book flights by July 31, 2019 for travel from September 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019.

Flying Blue Transfer Partners

Flying Blue has a partnership with all four major transferable point programs. Additionally, through July 20, 2019, Citi is offering a 25% bonus when you transfer ThankYou points to FlyingBlue. Although not all Citi cards allow you to transfer ThankYou points to airline partners, the Citi Premier Card or the Citi Prestige® Card are the two most common cards that offer this option. Notwithstanding the Promo Rewards, this 25% ThankYou transfer bonus is worth considering for other redemptions, particularly if the destination of choice is a Flying Blue award sweet spot.

Options for North America

AirFrance has released three award discounts to North America:

  • Europe to/from Toronto – 25% off in business class
  • Europe to/from Salt Lake City – 50% off in economy class
  • Europe to/from Minneapolis – 50% off in economy class

If you have a trip to Europe in the fall, taking advantage of these discounted awards could be a great idea. Your miles could go even further if you have Citi ThankYou points to transfer. A quick scan shows decent availability in September and October to the above-mentioned cities. Despite the low number of miles required, AirFrance includes annoying tax surcharges to many destinations. Thus, not all redemptions are a good value. FlyingBlue does not publish an award chart, however, you can use FlyingBlue's award calculator to determine the normal number of miles required for your trip; then, just apply the percentage discount.

Options for Global Destinations

  • Europe to/from Bogota – 25% off business class and 50% off premium economy
  • Europe to/from Taipei – 25% off business class
  • Europe to/from Bahrain – 25% off business and economy class

If you are planning on traveling to South America (via Bogota), Middle East (via Bahrain) or Asia (via Taipei), these redemptions could be worth looking into. A 25% discount on a long-distance business-class award is always welcome. Even if these locations aren't your final destination, consider using them as hubs. This is especially true if there is a low-cost carrier option available to your city of choice. You could, for example, fly in business class to Bogota, and then hop on a local carrier to Medellin or Lima (Peru). This would allow you to enjoy a business class cabin experience for a longer portion of your trip.

Our Take

As always, Flying Blue Promo Rewards can make sense if your travel plans line up with the destinations on sale and/or the dollar cost of your flight is particularly high on the dates when award availability exists. If you can combine a Promo Reward with the 25% ThankYou transfer bonus, the redemption could be a great deal.
