3% Cash Back on Groceries, Dining, Entertainment, and Streaming

The crown jewel of the Capital One Savor Cash is the unlimited 3% cash back on groceries, dining, entertainment, and streaming services.

While many cards offer dining as the main rewards category, few credit cards emphasize entertainment as a category that earns significant rewards. Other credit cards typically narrow the definition of “entertainment.”

For example, the U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® Card lets you choose two categories for 5% cash back each quarter (on up to $2,000 of these purchases, then 1% back). However, the only entertainment categories are “TV, Internet, and streaming” and “movie theaters.” If your entertainment spending falls outside these categories, few cards will provide bonus earnings.

Except, of course, for the Capital One Savor Cash. While the 3% cash back is slightly less than the 5% you'd receive with the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa, you'll get 3% cash back not only on streaming and movie theaters but also on a wide array of other entertainment. The Capital One website defines entertainment as:

“Ticket purchases made at movie theaters, sports promoters (professional and semi-professional live events), theatrical promoters, amusement parks, tourist attractions, aquariums, zoos, dance halls, record stores, pool halls or bowling alleys count. Golf courses, collegiate sporting events and non-industry entertainment merchant codes like cable, digital streaming and membership services are excluded.”

That is a significantly larger definition of entertainment than you'll find on other credit cards. Several of these expenses would fall into the “everyday” earning rate on other credit cards, likely earning 1 point or 1% cash back for each dollar spent. However, the Capital One Savor Cash significantly boosts many purchases simply by offering a broad entertainment category.

While many of the Capital One Savor Cash competitor credit cards earn rewards on travel purchases, the Capital One Savor Cash offers bonus cash back on activities that pair with your travels. Traveling to a city to see a concert? Planning to spend the weekend visiting tourist attractions that require tickets — or maybe going for a round of bowling with friends? The Capital One Savor Cash earns 3% cash back on all of those purchases.

Earn more through the Capital One Entertainment and Capital One Travel portals

While entertainment purchases usually earn 3% cash back, the Capital One Savor earns 8% cash back on purchases made in the Capital One Entertainment portal. This is a great option for buying tickets to sporting events, concerts, theater shows, and more.

Additionally, booking a trip through the Capital One Travel portal will earn you 5% cash back. This is also a good option since travel purchases would typically earn just 1% cash back with this card.

Discounts at Capital One Cafés

Capital One Cafés partner with Verve Coffee Roasters, combining a bank and a coffee shop in one space. In addition to typical banking services like accessing ATMs and managing bank accounts, visitors can enjoy food and beverages and find spaces to relax.

Capital One cardholders receive a 50% discount on handcrafted beverages at a Capital One Café. If you regularly visit a coffee shop to work or study, a Capital One Café can be a better option for your wallet.

Converting Cash Back to Miles

We've been talking a lot about cash back since that's what the Capital One Savor Cash earns. If this is the only Capital One card you hold, you can't earn miles or transfer those to Capital One's 22 hotel and airline partners.

However, you can convert your rewards to miles (and then transfer them to airline and hotel partners) if you have a Capital One card that earns miles. Options include personal cards like the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card and small-business cards like the Capital One Venture X Business, Capital One Venture Business and Capital One Spark Miles Select for Business. To turn cash back into miles, log in to the Capital One website and go to the “combine rewards” section.

This makes the Capital One Savor Cash an excellent way to earn miles on dining and entertainment purchases, assuming you also hold a Spark Miles- or Venture-branded card. And if you're looking for an option to earn miles without an annual fee, the Capital One VentureOne Rewards Credit Card is a solid choice.

Welcome Bonus

The Capital One Savor Cash comes with a generous bonus of $200 cash bonus cash back after you spend $500 on purchases within 3 months from account opening. This is pretty good for a cash back-earning card and sweetens the overall value of the card. However, better welcome bonuses are available this month if that's your primary motivation.

Our Take

If you spend a lot on dining and entertainment each month, the Capital One Savor Cash is an excellent card for earning rewards on those purchases. With its strong cash-back rates (and broad entertainment categories), the Capital One Savor Cash will quickly become one of the most used cards in your wallet. Plus, if you also hold a miles-earning card from Capital One, this card can be part of a broader strategy to combine rewards for upcoming travel redemptions.
