Copa Airlines has just launched a promotion for new ConnectMiles members, offering them 15% off their first miles purchase. Members who maximize this promotion can grab up to 100,000 Copa ConnectMiles for just 2.55¢ apiece.
There is no stated expiration date for this promotion, so it appears to be indefinite for all members making their first miles purchase moving forward. It's always a nice gesture from airlines when they offer members promotions like this, but does this discount make it worth the price?
Let's take a look at some of the details of this promotion.
General Note on Purchasing Miles
As a general rule, buying points or miles isn't usually the best way to accrue a loyalty currency. That's because airlines typically sell miles at a higher rate than they're worth. While buying miles with a bonus or discount presents better value, it's not always a foregone conclusion that you should buy them just for the sake of it.
But like any good rule, though, there are exceptions. If you're looking to top up your balance to grab a sweet redemption, a miles sale can make a lot of sense for that little extra you need. Buying miles can also save you money if it's cheaper to buy the miles than paying the cash rate of the ticket.

Miles Purchase Promotion Details
Even if you've been a Copa Airlines member for years (which I have) and have never made a miles purchase, you're still eligible for this promotion. Copa ConnectMiles, while not the most valuable loyalty currency, still has its time and place for certain redemptions. Regardless of your near-term travel plans, it could still make sense to take advantage of this promotion to stock up for the future.
Here are some important details for this offer:
- This promotion has no stated expiration date.
- Miles can only be purchased in increments of 1,000.
- Receive a 15% discount on all ConnectMiles purchases between 1,000 and 100,000 (up to 2,000,000 in a calendar year).
- All miles purchases come out to 2.55¢ each.
- This is an exclusive, non-transferable, one-time offer and can't be used for any non-eligible member.
- Purchased miles are not refundable and are acceptable for all ConnectMiles benefits.
- Miles will be deposited into your ConnectMiles account within 48 hours of purchase.
- Purchased miles will expire on the last day of the 24th month after the last qualifying account activity.
- This promotion may not be combined with other promotions and/or discounts.
- Check out the full Copa ConnectMiles terms and conditions.
Please note: Although the terms and conditions mention the limit of buying 2 million miles per year, there is a maximum of 100,000 per transaction. And since the 15% discount applies only to your first transaction, it's unlikely you'll be able to buy 2 million miles with a discount.
Maximize Your Purchase
Like a majority of airlines, Copa sells its miles via Points.com — meaning your purchase won't be coded as a flight purchase or any type of travel payment. We recommend utilizing one of these cards instead to maximize your purchase:
- A credit card for which you're working on a welcome bonus right now. These are the best welcome bonuses available right now.
- A credit card that has perks you can unlock from spending, like hotel free night awards, hotel elite status, or airline elite status.
- The best credit card for everyday spending in your wallet, such as the Citi Double Cash® Card or Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card.

Bottom Line
It's nice to see Copa Airlines release a promotion incentivizing members making their first miles purchase. This promotion to buy ConnectMiles with a 15% discount doesn't present the best value at 2.55¢ each. However, this deal could still make sense in the right situation.
For example, if you're on the cusp of a high-value redemption, this offer could provide the last boost you need to get it over the line. Also, buying ConnectMiles at 2.55¢ each could make sense if the cost to buy the miles is less than the cash rate for the same flight.
