Feature Benefits of the Aer Lingus Visa

Aer Lingus Visa cardholders get priority boarding on Aer Lingus flights between the U.S. and Ireland and enjoy several built-in protections when using the card for purchases. These include baggage delay insurance, purchase protection, lost luggage reimbursement, and extended warranty.

Plus, you can earn a companion ticket each year with the card. If you spend $30,000 or more on your card within a calendar year, you'll receive a companion ticket valid for economy-class flights with Aer Lingus. It's valid for 12 months from the date you earn it.

Maximizing Your Avios

These three Avios programs — Aer Lingus, British Airways, and Iberia — use distance-based charts with a few quirks that separate them from one another.

With British Airways, short-haul “off-peak” flights start at just 4,000 Avios one-way outside the U.S. Theoretically, you could get 18 one-way flights through the new offer. Within the U.S., awards start at 9,000 Avios. You also can redeem your Avios to fly transcontinental first class from New York (JFK) to San Francisco (SFO) or Los Angeles (LAX) for 51,500 Avios one-way.

A favorite sweet spot in the Iberia award chart is flying from the U.S. East Coast to Madrid (MAD) for 34,000 Avios each way in business class. The cost increases from the western U.S., but it is still an excellent deal: 51,000 Avios one-way.

With Aer Lingus, your best use of Avios is on flights between the U.S. East Coast and Ireland. You'll pay as little as 13,000 Avios one-way in economy or as little as 50,000 Avios one-way in business class. Prices can be almost 50% higher on peak dates, however. Flying from further points in the U.S. will increase one-way redemption prices to 16,250 Avios in economy and 62,500 Avios in business.

Getting More Avios

If you need more Avios for an upcoming redemption, you can transfer the following:

For more details, consult our resource on point and mile transfer times.

Combine Avios between accounts

It's also possible to move Avios between your accounts freely and instantly. You can transfer Avios between your Aer Lingus, Iberia, British Airways, and Qatar Airways accounts online for free. And there are no restrictions on having one of each Avios-earning card. That means you can potentially rack up hundreds of thousands of Avios in your program of choice from these current card offers.

Household accounts

British Airways allows users to share Avios. You can combine your points and redeem your points with up to six other members.

Application Restrictions

All three cards have the same restriction listed in the offer terms:

“This product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of this credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of this credit card who received a new cardmember bonus for this credit card within the last 24 months.”

Thus, if you currently have one of these cards or received a bonus on it within the past 24 months, you aren't eligible for the sign-up bonus on that particular card. However, this restriction doesn't apply across the cards. For example, if you received a bonus on the Aer Lingus Visa last year, that wouldn't affect your eligibility for the British Airways Visa Card.

However, Chase does have other application rules you need to consider. The most famous is the 5/24 rule: You likely won't be approved for any of these cards if you've opened five or more new credit cards (across all issuers) in the past 24 months. Moreover, Chase won't approve you for more than two cards in a 30-day period.

Bottom Line

Any time a rewards card offers a new welcome bonus, it's worth understanding the details. With these new offers, you can earn up to 100,000 bonus Avios on the British Airways Visa Card, or 75,000 bonus Avios on the Aer Lingus Visa and Iberia Visa.

These welcome bonuses could make now a great time to add one of these cards to your wallet. Each features a moderate $95 annual fee and comes with ongoing perks that can justify holding them in your wallet year after year.
